Your missing the bigger problem, this system is completely fine and works perfectly in any other game with random drops.
The problem is in those games you (normally) have tons of things you can do to get your end game items, we on the other hand need 3 specific items from a single source. This fact makes random drops terrible in this application.

13 days after this post a second option became available and now im 30. A step in the right direction! Side note, 5 days of bladedancer/shotguns is not worth one level...
