Let's talk about Thorn

Thorn is a handgun that has a "damage over time" (dot) effect. It is an exotic weapon which can be aquired via a relatively hard exotic bounty. Generally I am satisfied with the damage Thorn has. But it is not the damage that makes me think that Thorn should not be an exotic weapon. It has 6 bullets in a magazine and a reload time out of hell. The general situation in pvp for me is the following: There is an enemy. I shoot at him, I miss once but the enemy is dead. I now have 2 bullets left. Too few shots to kill a second enemy. I cannot reload because it almost takes 3 seconds to do so. So I have to switch weapons while going into cover. Even if I manage to survive that I can only switch back to my Thorn when there is absolutely nothing arround me. Now I have to switch weapons AND have to reload. This is arround 4 seconds now where I am cursed to wait.. If I compare Thorn to Lord High Fixer, I cannot say that Thorn is better. It should be. It is exotic and takes much more effort to get it than any other exotic I know. In PvE I think the weapon lacks of DPS. What are your opinions about that weapon?

  • I know where you are going with this post, and I am inclined to agree. Thorn is a great gun if you can use it properly, much better in the hands of a gunslinger using chain of woe and the correct gauntlets, but it is not significantly better than the legendaries. I too primarily use Lord high fixer as it is much more viable for large scale encounters in PvP, the kind where you are shooting multiple reds on a control base etc. The problem with thorn IMO is that its damage is lower than a legendary, to allow for the DoT, but the DoT does not stack. I found so many times that I lose battles and my target would have died if they took one more tick of damage. Also, There is no way Thorn can compete with the likes of Suros regime (not much can tbh, but I've avoided complaining about that thus far, will see what the upcoming weapon rebalance changes!) So, for the slow reload and heavy kick, you would expect all 6 shots to be deadly right, well currently they are OK, but not enough IMO. Again, the lack of stacking Dot, or even the ability to over penetrate by default means that the first headshot does 81 plus 28 dot, assuming 4 ticks of 7. But, the second shot then only does 81, and probably the third if you are quick. Now consider that not all encounters are 1v1, suppose your target has suros, red death, hungering blade or warlock melee and kills one of your teammates, thus starts to regen, you now have limited shots left in the mag and are far less likely to win that encounter. This is where legendaries such as lord high fair better, they do the full 86 per headshot regardless, are more stable and fire faster and have bigger clips, which improve your chances significantly. This is by no means a whine, I still love Thorn, was my first exotic, and I recently ground out a second for my warlock, but I do agree there is little reason to use it over its legendary counterparts. The deciding factor for me is that I prefer P&T for my exotic slot, and having third eye on that, and Lord High are better suited for PvP IMO. My suggestions for improvement of Thorn, as I have put on other threads, are: make the DoT stack, meaning every shot landed adds its own chain, Give critical DoT for headshots, say 10hp per tick. Have mark of the devourer prevent regent on targets while active. Increase the chance of staggering larger mobs in pve with devourer ticks. Have mark of the devourer over penetrate by default. (Has anyone noticed that this happens with multiple phalanx? Makes it quite useful for the mars raid!!) I'm not saying add all of the above, but feel any of them, with the existing slow reload and small clip would make each of the six shots go a lot further, and emphasise the need to carefully pick your targets, and time each shot well.

    • I think that Field Scout would 'fix' Thorn, bumping up mag capacity to 8 or 9, although to be honest in a 1v2 situation in PVP using anything other than a machinegun, rocket launcher or super is gonna be tough to consistanly win. When I have Thorn this context I just try to run away. When used correctly, which I think is 1v1 at medium to long range, Thorn does well.

    • It's a bitch to get. I helped a friend get it. EVIL. I have the bounty for it and the crucible part is just Bullshit and i mean really BS. I can hardly play PVP in any game (except titan fall) but it is still bull that i must play it and most of the posts i have read about it say it really isn't worth it.

Ive never ever had a reloading problem with it. All u need to do is take cover to reload or switch weaons.

    • The thorn is fine the way it is. I absolutely own with the thorn in Crucible. It's the only primary I use. Could you imagine, if it was more powerful, 12 guardians running around with lingering damage? There would be posts for nerfs the same day. If you know how to use it then it's amazing. Right now it takes skill to be good with it and it should be kept that way.

      • So your saying that a gun thats overpowered in pvp and weak in pve should be buffed to make it better? I think you should just use a different tactic. The game does revolve around you so dont expect bungie to jump up and help you play the way you wanna play........use a different gun. I get my butt kicked plenty by thorn in pvp. If you dont know how to use it then dont use it.

        •
I now have 2 bullets left. Too few shots to kill a second enemy
That is incorrect. 2 head shots with the Thorn will kill an enemy in the Crucible, considering that you have the DoT perk upgraded. Although I do agree that the reload speed coupled with the low magazine size is a problem for the weapon.

          • I have The Devil You Know, Last Word and Thorn. Thorn is a good HC, but compared to Legendary HC's Thorn hardly can match. Being that Thorn is an exotic, there should be more of an advantage or perk that makes it more powerful than a legendary. Thorn barely makes an appearance in my arsenal, unless I'm on patrol. I currently use TDYN for PVE and Last Word for PVP. Just need Hawkmoon and Fatebringer for my HC collection to be complete.

            • I am currently doing the Thorn bounty now and can't wait to get it, although I am seeing the same criticisms over and over again. Maybe Thorn does need some TLC in regards to mag size and reload speed!? It needs to be special, it's too cool not to be.

              • I love using thorn in PvP. Like others said you should use the send it perk as that seems far more useful than the stability. As for the reload time, you can take it down a little by canceling out of the animation part way through. Watch when you reload, your bullet counter will change to 6 right when your character shoves the bullets in the chamber. There is more animation after that but you can stop it by using melee or you can start a short sprint which is even faster (since you don't need to watch the melee animation) With some practice you will be able to do it consistently in crucible, try it out on patrol or something until you get comfortable.

                • I was just gonna make a thread about thorn lol. I've used alot of other HC and use Last Word primarily on my titan for pvp. I can shoot heads and thats not the issue. My issue is with the goofy sights on thorn. The bright green with the squiggly rear sight just makes it harder than it has to be for target acquisition. Another idea is to make the DoT stack and increase with every hit. This would only affect body shots in pvp (thus fixing the exotic quality and low round mag) so theoretically if you cant hit heads you could still kill someone with a full stack DoT in best case scenario. This would also fix the gun in pve and you stack the DoT and when it falls your reload is done and ready to apply DoT to max again. I've play sunslinger with it and definitely like the solar grenades and ignite with the thorn DoT though.. it makes for interesting pvp and you tend to get most kills from DoT. Just my thoughts.

Thorn is a hit and run style weapon you have to remove yourself from the primary combat to make it work well. You take out an enamy then run behind cover and reload also you have to build your character around the gun find armor that has increased reload speed for hand cannons. That all being said I do think it could use 2 more shots at least that way I can take out 2 enemies before I have to reload. Also if your using the stability perk on the gun don't, switch to send it its a lot better the recoil on thorn is a lot but its always in the same direction.

                  • I like the Thorn (Made a video involving it that one time) but it really can only handle an enemy at a time. Once more than one enemy happens, I have to choose between hoping I can hit both with one bullet and throw a grenade if I have one, or bail. Most of the time I can do one enemy at a time through my dedication to using invisibility to my advantage (or attempting to; I don't think it works sometimes. Invisible behind people and they turn on a dime and kill me out of it) , but the reload screws me over anyway if I don't turn invisible fast enough to evade enemies rushing in. I really like it, though. It fits my style of play, but it still feels kind of weak compared to what I could be using instead. Plus, I noticed the only time I get teabagged is when I use the Thorn. Lmao!

                    • You've literally gave the worst case scenario, you want a gun buffed because you lack the ability to headshot and hit the target? Don't be offended I'm not insulting your ability to pvp, I'm just saying that's what you post suggests. You miss one bullet, you land 3 non headshots, (maybe 2 body 1 head, not sure. But I know for a fact thorn kills in 2 headshots) so the gun is weak?

                      • Thorn is my 'fun gun'. I'm not very good with it, but it's such fun to play with it. I try to get just enough bullets in to be able to walk away with him dying while in cover and me walking away, reloading for my next victim. Are other guns much better, probably, but i love playing with it once in a while. It's also great for the post mortem bounty.

I haven't used it in PVP but I don't play a great deal of it. In PVE it rules, even with only 6 in the chamber I prefer it to my The Devil You Know. I like to take my time when playing though, I don't rush Strikes or Story missions so the reload time is completely irrelevant to me, ducking into cover to reload and going for the head all day long, with my P&T or Ice Breaker in my special slot, BLAM! If I was to buff it though I'd add 2 more bullets to the chamber and a perk that makes the final bullet deal a poison AOE blast, which damages nearby enemies over time as well. I'm very interested to see how Bungie actually does Buff it.

                              • I agree completely! It's also worth noting the gun's recoil. The thing kicks like a mule going through shock therapy. Makes it relatively difficult to keep track of the enemy after the first shot. If they can adjust that as well, than this thing will be a force to be reckoned with!
