While I strongly agree you're on the right track with the Fallen being previous recipients of the Traveler's light, if you check the Grimoire for the Fallen, they are currently sustained by ether which is presumably the darkness equivalent of Light for Guardians. It's a form of energy produced by their Servitors, which strongly resemble the Traveler, and distributed similarly in increasing amounts in relation to their rank. My guess is after their rejection, they sought a means to replicate the Traveler's abilities by drawing upon the power of the Darkness.

Or, Ether's a Light-Substitute. Great point on how the Servitors resemble the Traveler!

Hard to say exactly. I think that it is related to the darkness because it could explain their malice, you know? Perhaps they were once a civilised race of four-armed beings graced by the awesome power of the Traveler. Then one day, it simply moved on. Confused and hurt, they began to ask "why?" Why have we been forsaken? Are we not worthy? I can imagine them desperately crossing the galaxies in search of their lost Traveler. As time wore on and rejection, doubt and fear began to creep into their hearts and minds, they began to lose hope for the return of their former "god." Along comes the darkness. In much the same way that it corrupted Dredgen Yor (owner of Thorn, good read btw) it began to manipulate and change the Fallen. Promises of power and delusions of grandeur tainted their minds. They attempted to recreate the Traveler in the image of the Darkness, using Ether as their source of power, but at great cost. This infusion of darkness would further poison their bodies. (which might explain some of their breathing apparatuses) Ultimately, they began to hate the Traveler for leaving them, and began their new crusade to conquer and destroy those who have been touched by the light.

  • Their Tribal/House structure might be a remnant from the collapse of their own civilization. When everything collapses, those that survive band together, form new families, clans, houses, nations. Then they scavenge their old world for what they can use, relearn their technology, rebuild their industry, and then ... resume their Old War with the Traveler, following him to the Sol system.

  • Exactly. :D I find it odd that many people on the forums question things like the origin of the Vex, the Stranger, Warminds, the Nine, etc. But nobody seems that interested in the Fallen or the Cabal especially.
