UPDATE January 7th: Because this is still getting a lot of views and the original was essentially a rant, I've replaced it with a much easier to follow outline of the bug. Bungie comments and responses are located at the bottom. A (kind of) workaround is included.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is the bug?
* Reduces the available ammo of a given weapon or weapon type.
How long has this been around?
* Since game launch.
When does it trigger?
* Death (technically, respawning AFTER death).
* Going to orbit.
* Returning from orbit.
* Cutscenes.
What makes it trigger?
* Any item with the buff to increase the amount of ammo you can carry of a particular type.
* Rocket launchers with a bonus to tube size as a perk.
Methods I have used to test.
* Equipping the item / using a synth and killing myself.
* Gathering ammo legitimately and killing myself.
* Multiple death types (suicide/jumping off cliffs and NPC death).
Results of testing
* With items this has reduced ammo 100% of the time, without them it has never reduced ammo. This is not an intermittent bug, it is extremely easy to reproduce and should be a priority to fix.
*All tests were performed with the items of the type equipped then tested again without them. Each test has been performed at maximum ammo capacity and at varying levels of ammo. Results did not change.*
Items I have personally tested with and witnessed the bug
* Lucky Raspberry (Heavy ammo increase)
* Crest of the Alpha Lupi (Special ammo increase)
* Hezen Vengeance (Tube size increase from 2 to 3)
* Iron Regalia Boots (Increases scout rifle ammo)
* Various other items with the same buffs. Results unchanged and the above are my 'go to' testing set.
Update post-DLC - I have retested with Dark Beyond armor. Bug still exists
Ammo types I have tested and seen reduced
All of them.
Workaround
* Items with the 'Field Scout' perk turned on are not effected by the bug - this seems to only work for certain weapons. I have not found a rocket launcher that it works for.
* The actually loss of ammo seems to occur when you spawn/are revived. Therefore if you have time (such as dying in a hard mode raid) then you can avoid losing ammo by switching out the items that provide the buff before you are ressed.
Other observations
* With rocket launcher tube size increase, the ammo drops until you are down to 2 (thus the bonus isn't active)
* With special/heavy increases the ammo drops until 1 rocket/minimal machine gun ammo
* With primary ammo it seems it only drops to a certain amount then stops, however when you respawn in any situation it seems you are given a certain amount of primary ammo to start with. This seems to be the threshold and is possibly just offsetting the bug. No way for me to confirm this.
This bug has been acknowledged by Deej on the bungie forums in the past.
Yeah. Known bug. Unsure of status. I see you leaving a lot of good feedback on this forum, though.
After I posted the above on Reddit, Deej did again reply, offering the following:
As you have indicated in your original post, this is a known bug. I have no update on it's status. I'm sorry that you think we don't care. The fact of the matter is that I don't have any new information to provide at this time.
Edited by Elocnam: 11/2/2014 1:28:48 PMIt's not a bug. It is a way of making the game a little harder. Dieing and losing all of your heavy ammo sucks, but it's a small way of saying don't die. Also if you switch your weapon it loses ammo ex: sniper to fusion rifle less special ammo. So don't switch in game. Also having a lot of heavy ammo and going to orbit will make you lose some just because having a lot before going to battle makes you more powerful to enemies so they make you have to get some more. On another note, how is it a glitch? People at Bungie would have seen it and fixed it, right? The only thing that would be a bug is shooting since that involves ammo lost. And so far when I pull the trigger my gun shoots if it has ammo. So what is the real problem?
-
Is losing heavy ammo on death a glitch? I just assumed it was a mechanic
-
I KNEW IT! Lucky Raspberry user here, it was happening to me all of last night. I thought it was normal, but then I began to wonder if it happened to my warlock as well. I thought it was odd and part of the weekly heroic.
-
Atheon exploits take priority in updates.
-
People need to be aware of this. More than anything else, this is crippling Raid attempts. Take notice, Bungie!
-
It is not just when a person dies. I also can carry 7 and I lose 2 rockets everytime I go to orbit until I have 1 remaining.
-
Oh wow. I've had this bonus for so long I thought it was intentional. I kind of understood losing a rocket upon death but losing one when going to orbit? That just isn't right.
-
Wow. I never thought this was a bug. Yeah it is really annoying to burn a heavy ammo pack right before a wipe and lose 2 or three rockets Everytime. Everyone knows 2 or 3 rockets can mean the difference in wiping again or taking Atheon down. Definately needs a fix! Keep bumping this!
-
Bump. Glad you pinpointed the issue. Like most, I assumed I was supposed to be loosing ammo. Really discourages using ammo synth when I just loose it not even firing any of that type Please fix Bungie!
-
The exotic titan chest gear which should allow me to carry more heavy weapon ammo lets me carry exactly 1 more machine gun bullet. Is that a bug or is 226 the max? Or was it like "yeah, this should buff the rocket launchers. But dont forget machine guns, give them a bullet too!"
-
It's extremely frustrating it happens to be me as well
-
Wow I didn't realize this was because of my armor
-
Wow I always thought this was intentional, not because of the armor. It is quite annoying. Also wouldn't make sense seeing as how the game gives you free ammo when you run out of all ammo. Why take ammo when you're just gonna give it back right?
-
From what it seems like it's not only death but going to Orbit too.
-
They're too busy dealing with the complaints of the preteens about nerfing guns that real issues aren't important. Good thing they didn't go with the M rating, this game might've actually been good
-
So that what was happening. I always wondered why I would lose ammo, and my friend wouldn't, this explains it. Thanks for sharing! and bump!
-
Bumpity bump
-
You lose special and heavy ammo in crucible when you die.
-
-
Didn't read the whole thing BUT I hate there's no money gain in 75% of the VoG and ammo sometimes can be scarce PLUS sound keeps cutting out!
-
You lose ammo for dying? I'm pretty sure that's intended and it makes sense IMO.
