Well according to one theory he sacrificed a few billion humans to get the light to fight the darkness. He also says he fought with singularities. Normally in space sci fi a singularity refers to a black hole. A singularitie weapon is a black hole firing device. It can also be used as a means of travel. But there is also The Singularity which is the theortical (bah) point at which Humanity transcends our normal plane of existence. IE we leave our bodies behind and become something more. Now in the grimorie card Rasputin himself says he cast aside his shield and let the billions fall into ash. To me this says he took a huge chunk of Humanity. All that he could and attempted to save them by converting them to something else. But failed. Remember he was created to win at all costs and to save humanity at all costs. So he attempted to save us, but failed. But somehow used it to fight the darkness.
