I think a lot of people got their expectations up way too high. I've talked to people who thought Open World meant they would be able to walk all over the surface of the Moon. They cling to conspiracy theories and their petitions. Everyone I personally know that has bought the game have been playing it like crazy. I sent a PS3 beta key to a married couple I know and now they have two PS4's so they can play together online just for Destiny.

The best is when dinklebot told me on a patrol "now we can go anywhere we want" so I went to a new area, fell, and was told to turn back, before I knew it....dead....guess he should have said "almost anywhere"

An open world is a type of video game level design where a player can roam freely through a virtual world and is given considerable freedom in choosing how or when to approach objectives.[1] The term free roam is also used, as is sandbox and free-roaming.[2][3] "Open world" and "free-roaming" suggest the absence of artificial barriers,[4] in contrast to the invisible walls and loading screens that are common in linear level designs. ... [5] Generally open world games still enforce some restrictions in the game environment, either due to absolute technical limitations or in-game limitations (such as locked areas) imposed by a game's linearity.
The last section [5] is the key part. WoW, FFXIV, Fallout3, Dead Island, Dead Rising 3; these are all open world games and they all use kill walls or barriers to keep you in the areas of the game world.

  • Last section is key? Ignoring the intro line right?
An open world is a type of video game level design where a player can roam freely through a virtual world and is given considerable freedom in choosing how or when to approach objectives
Also, you ignore #4-
in contrast to the invisible walls...common in linear level designs
Also, I understand that there is no 100% open world, Im not a moron- but claiming to have an open world and then having invisible walls in your face any time you venture away from the main path is not open world- the invisible walls are a lazy fix and they could have used level design/geography to obtain the same effect, like other games have

  •
Open world" and "free-roaming" suggest the absence of artificial barriers,[4] in contrast to the invisible walls and loading screens that are common in linear level designs. ...
It says suggest it doesn't say it doesn't have them. Open-World means that you dont' go level to level like you would in say mario, gears of war, or contra. If anything I would argue having to go to the map to select your next mission instead of just being able to start it on the ground means it's on the edge of not being open world but it is a persistent world and you go back to the same map when you load the mission.

  • Please tell me that story of that game you played that had no boundries? Whoever thought this was going to be Minecraft with good graphics should get a block to the face.

  • I did not say no boundaries- actual boundaries would be fine, not invisible walls

  • Would you prefer for everything on the moon to have taken place in a giant crater you can't get out of? How would you put up actual boundaries for a desolate place such as the Moon? They actually do a pretty good job on Venus by using the water, hills, and Vex structures.

  • Actually like the sound of that one huge crater with other smaller craters and ridges to create the map damn sight better going down a gentle slope and dying after 5 seconds

  • Something as simple as a mountains (they have those on the moon) and some cliffs big enough to make it obvious that if you jump you die- it's not difficult

  • So you would like a small plateau on a mountain side that has a steep cliff drop off on the side to be the entirety of the Moon map? I personally prefer being able to look out and see the vast empty landscape of the Moon. It makes it look that much more massive in scale. I guess the difference is that I did not have expectations of being able to walk all over the Moon. I know that games have limitations with what they can do.

  • Yes games have limitations, no one is saying they don't, and no one ever said we wanted a small, closed in map-no more point in discussing if you are going to start being a moron...by the way, you can't look out over a cliff?

  • Let's try and keep the forums mature. This has changed from the original post of mine referring to what defines Open World. The game is Open World, it has some barriers due to limitations of what the developers can accomplish. They've stated that it is actual 3D geometry that they want to eventually open up. So maybe in time when there's been a chance for content to be developed for those areas that we will get to go out there.
