Destiny RNG Loot System is not bad.

In my experience, there are plenty of other games currently out that utilize the RNG Loot System and Destiny's is not the worst. For this post I shall use Diablo 3 as a reference and example due to the severe nature of it's RNG Loot System. In Destiny, with the exception of the perks, a weapons overall attack rating maxes out at 300 (currently). Your Visions of Confluence will have the exact same damage output as everyone else's. The only diversity this game has for it's weapons is that weapons found via engrams will have different perks than those purchased at the vendors. Now let's talk about some Diablo 3 weapons. For those of you that don't know, Diablo 3's weapons have a huge range of attack power. This is where it can get frustrating. So let's say I'm looking for "Weapon X" and it can roll anywhere from 1130-1780 base damage. You may have everything that is required of your build but "Weapon X" is needed to complete it. There are really only 2 scenarios that this can play out. Scenario 1: "OH! I just got a "Weapon X"! Let me run to town to identify it; I hope it rolled good. FACK! It only roll 1156 dps out of a possible 1780. I can't use this, I'll take a huge hit to my damage output. Guess I'll salvage this and go back to grinding." Scenario 2: "OH! I just got a "Weapon X"! Let me run to town to identify it; I hope it rolled good. YES! It rolled 1690 dps out of a possible 1780. It's not perfect but I can still have a good build. Guess I'll go back to grinding for a better one." For those that have played Diablo 3, you know exactly what I'm talking about and you know that Destiny's loot system is more promising than others. So before you say that Destiny's RNG Loot System sucks, think about this. If every piece of gear that dropped randomly rolled a base armor/attack rating that could still be upgraded but never reach the max potential, you would be swimming in the tears of those hating on Destiny's Loot System. So be glad they didn't make your precious Suros Regime roll 230-260 attack rating and can only be upgraded to 270-300. Same applies to your raid gear. At least in this game, when you get an upgrade, you know it's an upgrade. In other games, when you get an item that has the potential to be an upgrade, more often than so it will be trashed because of bad stat rolls. Edit: Since there seems to be some confusion about my comparison between this games RNG and Diablo's RNG, let me put it much simpler. Destiny RNG: Random chance in a raid to get Raid Tier Gear that will have the same stats as everyone else's raid gear of the same class. Diablo 3 RNG: Random chance on kill to obtain a Random Legendary Item. Random chance on obtaining Legendary item that it will be the item you need. On top if that, there is a random chance that the item you got that you needed will roll good enough stats to consider it useable. Meaning you will have more useless legendary quality items than Destiny per drop. So please tell me how it is a bad example. Please tell me how Diablos Loot System is better. At least in Destiny, if I get raid gloves or raid boots, I KNOW they are going to be an upgrade. In Diablo I could get 30 legendary gloves and not a single one can be used.

  • The problem with Destiny 2's RNG is that it doesn't reward better players. Me and my friends have been playing Crucible a lot, winning more than half of our matches, and our weakest player has not dropped a single usable item in over a week, always dropping either on common stuff, and getting weapons and armours too weak to infuse. He's dropped one exotic, which gave him the same gun he's using at a slightly higher level. It needs fixing so badly. Better players in a match should get drops that match their skill in the match. I've had games where I've been the top player overall, and gotten only an uncommon sidearm while our worst player drops an exotic engram.

It's year three and I am still in the same place as always where I can get 1st place in iron banner or crucible or SRL or nightfall or lead an entire raid and get constant blues, and then the guy that died 50 times and got 3 kills gets 4 legendaries and an exotic. No, RNG in any game is a stupid idea period. It screws quite a few people over when if you want people to grind just make them grind, make it so that if you do a raid you have a chance to get 1-3 items the raid gives and then make it so that you cant get a repeat of an item. If you get the whole raid gear except for the arms, you can do the raid 3 more times and still never get it with the current system. Make it so that you can't get repeats of anything in your inventory meaning that you can transfer all your raid boots to your kiosk and then get boots again, its a system that keeps you invested in the game but also gives you definite rewards. Don't make exotic bounties RNG, just make it so that after 15-20 weekly bounties you get the quest period case closed, i've completed every weekly bounty shiro has given me since day 1 and still no thorn quest has popped up and i'm sure I will miss the icebreaker for the same reason. For crucible it would be an easy fix of the person in 6th place has a 1/6 chance to get scaled gear, the person in 5th has a 2/6 and work your way up so that the person in 1st who carried the team has a 6/6 chance to get good gear, this system rewards everybody with scaled gear, partially maintains the stupid RNG people keep putting in game, and lastly actually rewards individual skill. These kinds of loots systems would be an easy way to make sure the hardcore people that ragequit if they don't get first place every match get rewarded for their hardwork while still giving average or unskilled players enough motivation to participate in these game modes.

  • D3's RNG isnt so bad. For me its better than destiny's. Been loking for TLW or HawkMoon since the end of year 1, and havent managed to find either still to this day(and were going on year 3 mind you) i have countless hours into destiny atleast 100x more than i have in d3 and my paragon 304 crusader hits for nearly 1B damage per blessed hammer. Ive found every item i wanted for him just by running rift/greater rifts here and there when destiny gets boring. Go figure right? The RNG in destiny is great for some and worse for others.

    • Also destinys loot system makes sense because it makes people want to do a raid again. For example if they gave the raid weapons the first time you did the raid there would be no need to do the raid again. This would make the game very boring.

      • This idea that whoever does the best gets the best is the way it should be would be kinda unfair because I've been on top in nightfall and gotten lagged out joined back and been on the bottom and if rng wasn't in play I would of gotten shit (I got the tlord a week b4 he sold it) so I thank rng should stay the same

I don't see how they can call it random when the game repeats the loot you already have. That is not random when one of my friends gets hard light four times in crotas end raids how can someone get the same weapon four times while I have played with him the whole time and have only received maybe three exotics from this raid? (deathsinger and crota) You play VOG for the fate bringer and when you finally get one the game just repeats the loot over. when other players are in there for the fatebringer. its like they know you have the gun and everyone else wants it but they give it to the person that dont need it. trooooolllllllllls just to make them keep playing because they know it will give it out so they think.....well maybe I will get it next week!!!

          • Just so you know, you are way off on the issue with RNG, it's not what drops, it's that nothing good drops for people who actually do good in anything. Seeing someone who entered last minute into anything get an exotic, while you who had to thought it from start to end only gets materials or a rare engram, this is not only unfair but it pretty much puts all your skill and effort to the ground.

            • IMO i belive its broken. For the past 3 months and doing the nightfall 3 times per week and raiding i have gotton more ships and shards than weapons. Still no Vex still no ghorn nothing but energys. Im even getting energys from the nightfall.... like really? At this point i have completely givien up on this game.... i only play it now to help everyone else get there repeat of exotics... I just dont think after having so many hours of gameplay, turning in bountys after bountys, playing crucible, strike, and raiding on 3 charecters each week that people shouldnt be getting exoitcs. i swear the only ones i have are ones i've bought from xur. If xur didnt sell exoitcs i wouldnt even have one.

              • I Diablo 3 you will find weapons and gear comparable to the difficulty setting you're playing on. Meaning you will have better loot drops the more you advance your char/ put time into. Period. And I can grind specific bosses for specific mats. They will not drop what I desire every single time, but it will definitely not take long until they do. If I go farming for keys I'll have a set ready in at least 40 minutes. And as a Diablo 3 player you know you don't rely on a weapon, you rely on your characters class abilities. By reaching endgame you will have so much more possibilities in utilizing your char with different gear and weapons, which you could reroll, that an advanced dps is a given. In Diablo it's not a Gjallerhorn, it's the jewels, and they are anything but elusive.

                        • This RNG is broken, not compared to others, it is broken in how it generates random numbers. One personal example: Gjallarhorn. I've been playing since day 1, and after 500 hours I got my first one three weeks ago. Yesterday I played two nightfalls and I got 2 Gjallarhorns !!! Two consecutive nightfalls gave me a gjllar as a reward!!! What are the odds?!?!?! This RNG generates the same randomized numbers for each player a lot, this is why people has 8 MIDA and 0 Gjallar (I am talking of a real person). And once it has dropped you something, it gets dropped a lot again and again. There are just 14 exotic weapons in Destiny (in XOne, not counting bounties and Raid weapons), how is it possible that after 500+ hours there is a lot of people who doesn't own them all playing 3 nightfalls and 6 raids a week ?!?!?!?

                            • The biggest issue I have with the RNG system and if it is so random, then statistics should surely play a part. Take a person that has created numerous characters, levelled them up and has on countless occasions completed the VoG raid (both HM and NM), as well as Crota Raid (both HM and NM), including Tiger and Roc strikes, Crucible matches, endless bounties and so on and so forth. This person has somehow always gotten Vex Mythoclast 4 times, but cannot get a Gjallahorn regardless, yet he plays with other gamers that have more than one (some with 4 or 5) yet they cannot get Vex regardless of how often they play. How can this be so random. Sure you can argue that by the very nature that some receive one weapon more often than others that should in itself say its random, but lets be honest how can it be? Getting one or two, sure we can put that out to random, but 3, 4 or 5 surely that isnt very random?? I have gotten Vex number of times, as I have Fatebringer, Ice Breaker etc and yet there are other weapons that elude me entirely, as it is for members of my clan. I cannot believe that Destiny's RNG system works very effectively. By now, if it is so random, with the countless hours spent on the game, completing various tasks - I should have gotten the Gjallahorn - Surely!! The Loot system and drops I have no problem with, whether it be green or blue. Four our of five of the Legendary Engrams I have picked up, and taken to Rahool the Cryptarch, have turned out to be either Energy or Shards. That has been horrible. Same thing with the Raids....I am prone to getting Gauntlets, regardless of which character I play with. I think that Bungie is getting a lot right, and I do believe they listen even when we dont believe they are. Sure the game can always improve, and the monotony is killing the game, especially with the delay of HoW in May rather than March. Yes I also feel the debacle around Ascendant and Radiant materials was poorly done, but Bungie has recognised it. There is always room for improvement, its the very reason I believe that the RNG system is flawed. Me getting the Gjallahorn wont stop me playing, but not getting one when I see clan mates getting their 2nd, 3rd and 4th will most definitely cause me to stop. I was absolutely flabbergasted since Tuesday that this has happened again when playing with my clan, and that sense of disappointment was gut-wrenching seeing my mates getting more Gjallahorns. Anyhow, I think Destiny still has loads of potential. I wish VoG glitches could be addressed, but I only have faith that it will improve, or rather, I hope it does. I cannot fault the game for introducing me to some amazing gamers, whom I can now call friends, but for the Love of Destiny - I do not believe the RNG is working properly. Not at all in fact.

                            • In terms of pure random number generation and not actual loot quality or output I think destiny has an acceptable RNG. In terms of rewarding players on time spent, loot quality and loot output (and of course duplicates and the coincidentally high drop rates of dlc loot after dlc launch) I think destiny has a lot of room to improve. "If you get everything then you will stop playing." - doesn't apply to me, I play way more since getting vex, gally, mida etc. I quit for about 5 weeks after a frustrating dry spell though. "Raid drops are fine, keep playing." - I think they aren't bad per se but at the very least you shouldn't do an entire raid and be rewarded with nothing but mats and / or a ship. "The drops are fine, I got 15 gallys / suros / HoPF from the loading screen." - Good for you, meanwhile in Glasgow there's some poor kid with 25 Aspect of Glass ships and zero fatebringers or Vex Mythos. I'm not calling for loot communism or even buffed drop rates. Just some rng mitigation or rewards proportional to the challenge. And some consistent amongst the player base, but that one is just a fantasy :P
