It's one of those things the developers probably would like to do, but since there's no way to gather metrics from the game to support these ideas it's hard to justify to the folks setting the budget that's it's worth the development time. I'd say the easy way to give it a test to see fanbase support of the idea is to just put in shaders for ships and sparrows and make them only rewarded by doing a specific task. For sparrows a simple concept: make three check points and a portal. If the player can get through all three and into the portal within a certain window of time it takes them to an area with a loot box that always drops a random sparrow shader along with some glimmer. Have the loot box reset every day so players could do it multiple times a week, and just watch the numbers. How many do it? How often do they do it? Do they still do it when there's no reward? Do others do it with them to race them? How often does this occur? What percentage of the fanbase does this? And so on, and so forth. Only once they have valuable data to support the development can they justify doing it. It's a Triple A game, and neither publishers nor studios make decisions lightly with 500 million dollar investments in a 10 year IP.

  • I don't think it would be a waste of Time if they made missions and important things surround it. Like a mission where you infiltrate a fallen ship after you've destroyed the smaller ships and broken a hole in the hull of the whole thing. That would be fun. (More than one mission too)

  • They could build their own feature polls into the game itself to gauge such opinions if they really wanted metrics on it. Whack it in the top left of the screen in orbit. I for one and a least one other friend consider it to be one of our most wanted features/additions...I'd also like to see much more varied ship designs, including ability to retrofit or steal alien ship technology so you can have hive ships etc

  • I was thinking about how pointless the ships and sparrow upgrades are, which leads me to believe that they will be part of some future DLC. If not it's yet another one to add to the growing list of Destiny wtf moments...

  • That would be great. I wanna be able to put chatterwhite or thunderlord on my raid or queen ship. But yeah the race test you mentioned would be a good idea. There are already people doing it for fun with no mode. "BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME"

  • Indeed. Could be an interesting thing to see in the game, with just absurd potential, such as a way for the Factions to compete with one another by racing it out with the sparrows they design (like modern stock car racing and the respective "penis measuring" antics of Ford, Chevrolet, Pontiac, etc.) and racers that fly their colors (like sponsor decals in modern racing). Space combat is a whole different animal to take on, and would be virtually a different game inside the game. It would need to start out super simple, such as just flying around in space with resource nodes to gather and a few simple weapon mechanics that share resources from normal combat mechanics, such as the sparrow statistics for speed and durability, it's boosters, side to side moves, and speed brakes. Near identical to sparrows but in a 3-axis environment. It would also have to borrow assets from 3rd person control much like The Sword of Crota and Arc Blade, and use an amalgam of rocket launcher and machine gun heavy weapon mechanics. It would be a great deal of dev time just to build a working prototype, then even more to have fully tested and run through quality control. Sparrow racing seems to be a much much easier notion, as everything needed to do it is native to the game already. The empty yet winding, obstacle containing, transitional areas between zones are already built. To just take them, stick them end to end, and recycle that existing real estate per planet in its own mode would be a large amount of work, but not nearly as much as building Space Combat. One seems doable just playing around with existing code and assets, the other seems only doable by making more code and assets.

  • Cept Pontiac isn't a thing anymore :/ I know that's just a generic company you picked, but it still makes me salty trying to get parts for my Pontiac since they don't really make them anymore =( lol.
