Bungie: An Open Letter From A Concerned Player

Bungie, I am becoming exasperated with you. I had been looking forward to Destiny since it was unveiled. It was the amalgam of social FPS and persistent world that I was looking for. Okay so that's not was delivered. Nothing apart from your personal stats and inventory persists. The game mechanics are solid and my friends and I had been having fun so I decided to stick with it & give you the benefit of the doubt because of your history of producing games that I have thoroughly enjoyed. You have asked for feedback and I have been providing it constantly in an effort to try to help improve what feels like a 75% complete game at drop. Your players have dealt with two DDoS attacks along with other ongoing network/server issues. There have been PSN/XBL service issues that are not your fault & I understand that. What I cannot understand is how you are simply ignoring your players. Last week you nerf'd ARs, shotguns, the Vex Mytho & some other weapons in the name of balance, PvP balance. Your players provided you constructive criticism for a week outlining that there needs to be a wall between the PvE and PvP weapon and armor values tables. Agree or disagree I have not seen anywhere where you even acknowledge the suggestion. The weekly update contained a vague & ambiguous statement about balance. However the sentiment of your quest for balance is faulty which I tried to illustrate to you yesterday. I am not arrogant enough to think I deserve an individual response to all of my criticism but when so many people agree on certain points Bungie should feel an obligation to respond to the community at large. We are largely against the changes being made to the 3rd phase of the Atheon fight, especially considering that this "bugfix" has been prioritized over fixing actual issues with the raid like the gates & how the shield sometimes just doesn't work. We've all provided you feedback on how to improve the PvE and PvP experiences. We'd like to see inventory management improved. We'd like to see loadouts due to the Exotic Weapon restrictions. We'd like to see a way to apply ammo synthesis quickly without having to go two levels into a menu. Many people would like to see an opt in proximity chat, better matchmaking for PvE events and overall improved social features. If you are considering these options, great. You have to tell us. We know that "prox comms are coming". That's about it. There are buckets of other criticisms involving the lack of depth in the story, the failure to hook players into the world & the lack of delivery on promises concerning our ability to customize our Guardian to be uniquely ours. People are not happy about having to go to a website to dig into the lore. The grind of the game through 5 strikes & the same repetitive bounties is wearing on many. There are also more concerning accusations regarding what future DLC content was withheld behind a paywall (if any was). True or not those accusations are dividing your community badly. I have done what I can by providing the feedback you've requested. I've even indexed my feedback for you. What stings is that Bungie does not appear to be hearing its players. We get one blog post a week where your Community Liason Deej plays funny. This comes off condescending to many of us due to the pile of issues we would like to see responses from Bungie on. Please, respond to some of our ideas. Positive or negative... respond. Respond with more than "keep on giving that feedback" when people ask for raid matchmaking. You are, as of today, one week away from seeing many of your Crucible players find the airlock when CoD drops. Right now I cannot blame anyone who shelves or sells this game because of the failure to deliver on the advertised promises let alone the inability of Bungie/Deej to provide meaningful responses to valid criticisms and suggestions for improvement of our game. I am personally sticking with you just a little while longer but while I was initially an ardent supporter of Bungie, Destiny, & your DLC pay model I am now on the fence. What comes with The Dark Below will be my progress check with you. If you have not heard us by then and provided us with clear path and timeline for when some of these needed improvements will come, I will sadly move on. I know I am not alone. Please start respecting the voice of your players. We understand you had a vision but sometimes you have to put the hubris aside and realize that the vision has to change. Many of us are tired of posting to a wall that no one with the power to make changes seems to be reading. Respectfully //Ozman51 (anyone who agrees please bump this post in addition to a Like to keep it on the top of the forums for others to read, thanks) Edit: 10/21/14 12:10p ET - I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their support and to those of you who have offered comments for largely keeping the tone civil and for generating good side discussions. Keep on bumping, liking and commenting. I have been trying to reply to as many people as I can. I truly do appreciate your input and criticism. Edit 2: 10/22/14 11:25am ET - DeeJ posted in the main Destiny forum yesterday directly "On Community Feedback". I believe this post from him was motivated by negative reaction to his coverage of a 3rd party website in lieu of addressing real issues but some had suggested that he was talking about this post as well and as such I felt inclined to write a reply to him.

  • I'm not a game developer and I have answers to what ales this game (ain't that a b!tch Bungie?) (Keep in mind they had 6+ years of development time and everything I'm suggesting has been done before with less time and wayyyyyy less money.) I would have the tower as an ACTUAL social hub where there were areas you could go to meet people who wanted to do the same thing. For instance: Story Mode Social Hub push A to search players Strike Mode Social Hub push A to look for players Raid Mode Social Hub push A to search players ext ext. When you search the players who are in the social hub for story, raid, strike, whatever, it gives you a list of players who are also searching and it shows you their level and DNF%. To team up with them just push A. After pushing A you can now talk to the player(s) you joined and decide if you want to keep your team or wait for more to join (push A to continue with current party.) NOT HARD TO IMPLEMENT GIVEN THE TIME TABLE. AND IT HAS BEEN DONE BEFORE... NOTHING GROUND-BREAKING HERE. Trading items at the tower in the "trade hub" SUPER EASY TO CARRY OUT. For the "story" mode I would put in an actual story, which Bungie had before Activi$ion made the lead writer quit, undoubtedly because of cutting content. But go ahead and believe that he left on good terms, I know you can't read between the lines, hell, you can't even read the lines themselves. But anyways, I digress. Like I said.... I would have an actual STORY! 10 year plan? I can dig that! Just hit me up with a sick prologue. Character development? Invested interest? Plot twist? (AGAIN, SUPER EASY STUFF THAT HAS BEEN DONE FOR YEARS WITH LESS MONEY AND LESS DEVELOPMENT TIME) What would I do different? I don't know.... maybe dynamic enemy fights? Set pieces? Bosses that are unique and different instead of just bullet sponges in different skins. OPEN WORLD---- This was promised to us from the start and not until the game was released did we realize that there was hardly anything open or explorable in these "worlds." Just paths for our bikes to get us to the next enemy spawn location. I DUNNO? LET'S PLAY STUPID? HOW COULD I MAKE THIS GAME BETTER? DUR DUR DUR.... Those are just 4 easy things to give a shell of a game more meaning. Given the time and money Bungie$$$ acquired none of them are hard to include into a FULL GAME. That's not even to mention backstory on the factions and faction wars in the crucible or real communication through players via proximity chat. Already I have seen this game falling off... When I first loaded up the game and got set to face the "darkness" (lol Bungie, I can't even talk about your game without proving how terrible your story is) I saw at least 5 players at every public event. Now I'm lucky if I get ONE player to join me. They (Bungie/Destiny/ActiveRipOff) have already lost a significant part of the population less than a month in and it's no wonder why... at least it's no wonder why for those of us who are leaving... the rest will leave when more major game releases hit (I already saw a significant population drop when Shadows of Mordor was released.) It's funny to me when people defend this game.... only because I see the inevitable downfall 3 weeks into a "10 year plan." Maybe they should have released a full game...

  • Yo, by the way Oz man... I think I remember you from back in the day... on the Bungie forums during Halo 2 and 3.... I was under my old account 'true zen master' and I think we had a couple conversations...

You go man! You have the patience and know how to carefully articulate a post that makes sense, Bungie. Give this man a job.

    • Bump. I wholeheartedly agree. I gave my two cents worth last week, so I won't write a novel this time. Just want to say that I agree to everything that was said above

    • Eleventy billion times bump. I am so glad to see kindred cool headed players. One thing I would add to your post is to ask that Bungie implement an actual support system.

heres a Repost of a comment i made awhile ago.. seems appropriate here... id like to comment on the Communication between bungie and us as well. there used to be this company, called Atari. they made this Awesome game called test drive 2,and promised us the World. we fell for it,bought dlc-s,the casino, etc etc. we also posted daily and tried to help make the game better. less than a year later, atari closed the forums on Pretext of maintenance, never to be opened again./sept 2012/ they also closed the casino ingame, for no official reason,With No Warning,so all our money that was in the casino bank is now gone forever. they made a LOT of Real money off us,and farked us over bigtime, and now where are they? on facebook, making little atari posts about the old days and their commitment to players. GAG* perfect lesson on how-to become an Obsolete developer. since then, when i see a company doing shit like bungies doing now,im always reminded of what happened to atari. perhaps you should rethink the way you Handle the players/fanbase Bungie,or we might be reading Your lame facebook posts in a year too. 10 year plan my ass..best to be fixing things or it wont make it a year.

      • I agree 100%. I would not feel so frustrated with this game (that has great potential) if I saw some responses from Bungie addressing valid comments. If you don't plan on fixing valid issues let us know so we can move on. If you do have a plan let us know, it makes a difference. If I pinned under a car and someone told me help would be here tomorrow, at least I know they are coming. I have had a lot of fun with this game, but it is getting to be like COD for me, repetitive.

      • To me, one of the amusing factors is how much this resembles political discourse. Everyone seems to have the notion of "we're going to implement this and fix this" but when asked about specifics, there is nothing but silence. This seems yet another domain about that. Look, I get it if Bungie wants to be politically correct and not make promises they can't keep. Give us a snapshot of the "minutes" of your meeting. What things were discussed and brought up? What points were addressed? Was there anything voted on? Was there anything shelved for later? Was there anything that is to be addressed soon? Another game I play releases a "behind the scenes" article once a month (they've been running for over a decade) but your weekly updates have to be more specific. Give us a section that notes what you plan to bring up in the meeting even. Anything! I'm with you 100% Ozman. The grind is wearing on me. The same strikes on repeat. The mark grind is running thin. My items are reaching their limits and the guns I want are almost done. Until new content is released this is likely to be shelved soon. I have an endless stream of other games to choose from, and with the end of year coming and bringing with it a lot of great titles, yes, I may leave. Sometimes, games look great on paper, but execution is poor. Is this yet another game that we leave in the graveyard?

Is it already to late?!? Has everyone that was playing on xbox live already left? I have been trying to get into a pvp match for two days now and can't find a soul on. I sat in the tower next to the bounty guy for 30 minutes yesterday while I messed around on my phone and didn't see anyone all day. I figured it was something wrong with the servers so I came to the forums to see if there was something about it but I don't see anything except people saying they will leave if things don't change. I do agree with Oz and it seems like either way it doesn't look good for Bungie. I popped BF4 back in and it worked like a champ..and that is sad when you can say that BF4 works better than your game. Looks like CoD:AW will be coming out just in time.
