*TIPS* How to get better at the crucible

DISCLAIMER: a quick stat check will reveal im average at PvP...however, I have really improved in crucible, and I feel like its my favorite part of the game. I would like this thread to be full of things that will help people do better on the crucible. Please add to this, start/continue discussion, etc. The only replies should be helpful or ones that ask questions. Intro I will say this: the crucible has the highest learning curve I have maybe ever seen for a console FPS for quite some time (maybe even since halo:ce) Bottom line: if you think crucible is awful, its most likely because you are bad at it. Here is a thread with the hopes of getting you better. Please add to the list in sequential order 1. PICK UP HEAVY AMMO WHEREVER POSSIBLE. I cant believe how much this ia a game changer if an entire team understands this. This dates back to halo 1: control the power weapon, control the game. 2. Do not neglect the sniper rifle. I hardly see people sniping, yet it might be the easiest sniper gameplay I have ever seen on a FPS. Reminds me of halo 1. The sniper is amazing for racking up kills. 3. Get to know the maps. The more experienced tou are at a map, the morelikely you will be able to unserstand "map flow"--- how often people are at locations around a map and when. This is key in winning. 4. Play with a team. I play a lot by myself, but I can tell you that everytime I have gone into crucible with a full team, 9/10 games we win. Why? Communication. Plain and simple. 5. Dont get frustrated. For everytime you get killed with the OP blade dancer or anything else you deem OP...realize you have a counter. 6. DO NOT TRUST THE RADAR! If you see a red blip, try to estimate where the oponent will be...dont focus on the radar...focus o your surroundings! This ties in heavily with point #3 7. Dont think any class overpowered. They all have ups and downs. Play with your subclass setups....that is the real trick. 8. On control: capture a point and CONTROL it. You dont need to have all three! 9. Handcannons are underutilized. 10. You should save your super. Really, they ate awesome to use on more then one person. Stop doing fist of havoc on a lone guy in objecti e games. 11.TEAMSHOT!!!! This is a staple in all bungie games. Pop shots and help your teammates. This is a key for winning gun battles. 12. Dont be a lone wolf. Stick around your team, just dont smother them in case of rockets or specials! 13. Stop complaining. Everything that is being done to you you can do right back. 14. Take mental notes of what the other team is using. Getting decimated by the shotgun at every turn? Simple. Hang back and dont rush! Dont feed the enemy kills! 15. Dont try to win one one gun battles unless you get off first. 9/10 times the person who shoots first will win, unless the opponents have a severe discrepancy in skill level. Take cover, get your shield back and then try. 16. Crouch. I cant tell you how underutilized crouch is. 17. Stop being stubborn. If you die a couple times in a row rushing in..change your strategy ! Post yours!

  • I like this list for the most part, although most of my friends don't like Crucible as much as I do so I end up lone-wolfing it a fair bit. I do try to stick near teammates whenever possible, but I also will not follow them into stupid, exposed positions. This is as good a segue as any into the tips on your list that I feel are most beneficial. I feel the learning curve of all FPS games are centered around 2 things. Learning maps and learning/controlling recoil of whatever your weapon of choice may be. Unfortunately map knowledge can only be gained by playing, and yes occasionally taking a beating here and there. Don't get discouraged, the more you play the more you will improve. Map knowledge will allow you to quickly examine a situation and put yourself in the best available position to come out on top. This goes hand in hand with knowing when to rush in and when to hang back. Knowing what to expect/where to look is key in all situations. I have noticed a lot of replies saying "aim for the head". I can not stress enough how key this really is. Headshots are king in this game! This is also where recoil control comes into play. If you are playing with a gun that will be cloud hunting after the first 4 shots, you better learn to compensate or suffer the consequences. We all pick a gun for certain reasons, so just be sure you are doing whatever you can to improve your performance with that weapon. PvE can actually provide a much less punishing environment to learn recoil control. Go full auto on some AI and focus on getting subsequent crits. If you can hit a Vex in the stomach with 6 shots in a row while holding down the trigger, then you sure as hell can do the same to a fellow Guardian's face. I disagree with the blanket statement of DO NOT TRUST THE RADAR! Your next sentence, however, is pretty on point. Learn HOW to use the radar. Learn to anticipate where the enemy will come from based on that red slice of pie in the top left of your screen. Learn how and when to pre-nade if you so desire, as this can be extremely useful in winning engagements. Don't rely solely on the radar at all times, but it is an invaluable tool when used properly. One final note, as I agree with number 9, Handcannons are extremely high risk/high reward in Crucible, especially for new players. The pace of Crucible can be truly punishing to people that can't take well timed, well aimed shots at a rapid pace. The standard low number of rounds, coupled with a relatively slow reload speed, are two very detrimental things when not taken into account or when there are no perks on the gun to remedy at least one of these drawbacks. For new players I would suggest pulse or auto rifles. These weapons dominate crucible for a reason. I would then say, when you feel up to the challenge, switch to a scout rifle or a hand cannon, as these things can decimate with a few well placed shots to the face and ultimately feel more satisfying to do well with in my opinion. TL;DR Version: 1. Map Knowledge 2. Recoil Control/Headshots 3. Understand HOW to use radar, rather than not trusting it at all. 4. Handcannons are great, but with a very high risk/reward ratio.

This ties in heavily with point #3" Bullshit, the radar is the cornerstone of how I got a 2.3k/d. I use the Hunter radar helmet for that reason. GTFO with your peasant advice, back to "earning" exotics when you go 2/25, and I carry you with 30/2 and get a blue cloak.

            • My biggest tip if someone wants it... Use a Heavy Machine Gun. They tear it up harder than a rocket launcher. If you pick up a nice HMG you should be able to get 5+ kills for every heavy ammo you pick up.

              • I agree with most things, strong disagreement on crouching though. I've never found crouching to be effective in any game imo. Been playing Crucible for most of my time in Destiny (average around a 2.4KDR across all characters and gamemodes). In my opinion (based on my playstyle as well) I always recommend a few things based on the patch currently. 1) Primaries: it's called a PRIMARY rifle for a reason, use these mainly and don't make your SECONDARY your PRIMARY (exception for Mythoclast, etc). From testing in countless games here are my results based on what I've experienced. Auto Rifle - Pretty standard kill time. All around solid if you get precision damage. (Don't have exact number of bullets for kill) Pulse Rifle - on average it's a 9 bullet kill (2 burst to body, 1 to head). Or a 12 bullet kill (all body). Currently maining Stranger's Rifle, but it is really personal preference. Scout Rifle - On average I see SR's taking 4 bullets (all headshots) or 5 bullets (4 body, 1 head). Scout Rifle currently is my #2 choice if I don't want to use a Pulse Rifle. Hand Cannon - str8 beast. Consistently seems to be a 3 shot (2 body, 1 head), though if the enemy has taken any amount a damage, 2 headshots result in a kill. 2) Not much here, I always use Sniper as a Secondary. The reason I always argue Sniper over Shotgun & Fusion Rifle is that the map control you receive with sniper is too good to pass up. Your effective range skyrockets when using a sniper vs the other secondaries. 3) 1:1 trades aren't what you want. I see too many players running around with a shotgun dying 5 times in a row then trading 1:1 with someone. End of the game, you end up being almost useless to your team with abysmal negative KDRs. Sorry to say but a .2 KDR in a mode like Clash does not help your team. Those are some general tips. Kinda typed this out fast so hopefully I didn't typo too hard or miss anything. I can post screenshots of scoreboards of some games I played recently if anyone feels like they need "proof" I'm a decent player or anything. (Might still post scoreboards if people are really interested regardless of proof.) if people want to see my most successful PvP gear set up on this patch I'd be more than willing to get a screenshot of that up as well. TD;LR USE PRIMARIES = WIN GAMES Good luck in the Crucible!

                    • Everything goes down at point B, that's where the chaos usually builds up. One by one (usually) team members that fail to realize this will trickle toward Point B to die without any strategy. Teams that can control the Point B area will rack up some serious murder.

I'll give you some tips. I have a 2+ KD. Don't use your jump while in gun fights. You'll miss a bunch of shots. Don't sprint everywhere. It takes longer to ready you weapon. When you're closer to the action just walk and you'll find yourself more prepared when you find an opponent. Use rocks, walls, or anything else in the environment to your advantage. Don't walk in open spaces! Keep close to corners, wreckage, rocks, etc. so that when you run into someone you have cover to keep yourself alive. Don't rush people who go into cover. Remember what I said about it taking longer to ready your weapon. The person waiting for you to rush them will have the advantage. Use your grenade or wait for them to poke back out instead. Again, don't rush people! 90% of the people who go into cover will pull out their shotgun and wait for you to rush. Patience is key in Crucible. Make your opponent come out into the open, don't let them trick you into running right into their shotgun. Learn spawn points. Not so that you can spawn kill, but so that you can keep the enemy from spawning behind you. And if they do spawn behind you, you won't be caught off guard. Always keep at least one teammate back in your spawn to prevent the spawns from flipping and screwing you over. Spawn control > Weapon Control. This isn't Halo...so don't push all the way up into your opponents spawn. Learn call outs. Yelling A, B, or C is good enough if you've learned the Control Points, even in Clash. Those call outs will be helpful in warning your teammates where the opponent is spawning or rushing you from. Lastly, find a Suros Regime and USE IT!

The best "Tip" you could give someone is to just reach rank 30 so then you have a godly advantage over all your competition. I really don't understand how someone would stick up for such an unbalanced piece of crap. Do you like unfair advantages or something? Do you like having an atrocious matching system? Do you like all the easy one shot kills and BS?
