I really don't think the VM was nerfed JUST because it was so strong in the crucible. It was because there was a massive surge in people getting and using the weapon shortly after the push off method was posted. Don't fret yet - I'm sure bungie is upset they had to nerf the best reward in the game. I've beaten Hard mode Atheon without the exploit several times with my raid team. Something tells me we will get another incredible weapon from the next raid - and they will make the encounter as ruthless as possible. After a lot of cheese proofing, that is.
