Ever think the ai didn't want to die??? Think of fighting the ai as fighting the ai in a chest game, they are meant to play defensively because the ai is trying to make the most use out of the units out against you at any given time.
Think about when you are in the devils layer, the stealth vandals are like horsemen pieces on the board, meant for a quick in and out strike. When you are focusing your attention on the other targets the stealth vandals and dregs will move in from different angles to close distance. The more distance covered before they are figured out then likely they are going to be efficient and kill a guardian. Stealth vandals use others as cannon fodder as they sneak up on you.
In all honesty if you watch the ai fight each other in skywatch instead of fighting them, you might think of them as clever little bastards.
Fighting the ai is meant to be annoying because the ai wants to give you a challenge, not hand out free kills left and right.

When I said get Sorian's help, I meant BECAUSE the Planetary Annihilation AI is good. I've seen his work since Supreme Commander, it's because of him I actually build anti-nukes against AI early! His work is scary. And you're right, the AI soldiers probably don't want to die, but I'm sure to the Fallen/Hive/Vex/Cabal the Guardians are known to be utterly ruthless killing machines devoid of all integrity and honour. Much like how the Daleks fear The Doctor. But wouldn't it be amazing to be "the guy who killed a guardian"? The AI rarely tries to sneak up anyway, If you run this week's Nightfall, you can hide to the side and not get stabbed in the back. Why don't Hive enemies spawn from the little hole that you hide in? It goes straight to a Hive area.

Cough cough stealth vandals sneak up on you all the time

All the ones I've seen just rush straight at you, maybe a 20cm variance of direct line pathing, under the guise of "im stealth you cant see me"
