This is correct. Exotic Engrams never drop and can only be purchased from Xur. More than likely you saw a green engram that was colored yellow by the death screen effect.

LOL... Im very glad to see that Bungie staff doesn't take care to answer questions of people like me (that cant play the game until 25/9) but is very quick to reply to these kids.... Compliments Bungie I ll -blam!- myself rather than buy another Bungie game....

It makes sense to answer the questions that are easily answerable. I doubt that bnghelp is a network engineer, or a programmer for the game, able to fix your problem for you.
