He's there to support newcomers, like the back wheels on a tricycle. at some point you no longer need them.

I don't think i've ever purchased a single gun from him for anything other than fast weapons parts to upgrade something I already had.

When i first started, i bought about 5 guns from him. My trax callum 2 was my main weapon for a while and i bought it from the gunsmith. Right now he's useless for me aside from getting the ammo restore for my zombie apocalypse. But i don't think he's utterly pointless.
