I rarely use a mic, and rarely join fire teams, but when I have all has gone well. And I'll admit I'm not the greatest player. I'm more a weekend warrior, or after the kids are in bed warrior. I don't get to game as much as I did when I was younger, so my skills aren't the same as they used to be, but I haven't heard any disparaging remarks. Not even when I died again like 15 seconds after my poor teammate revived me the other night...(sorry to whoever that was!)

  • Know what's interesting? I've seen by replies that... I should probably go count... Just under half of the responses from self identified females has been positive. So I mean by this count, it's not as much of a problem as may have thought. Now, I could be super technical and note that 51% is still a majority but... The point is the community might not be as awful as it seems. But. This seems more to reflect guys not being rude to bad players, rather than guys not being cruel to females. And female =/= bad player.

  • That's a good point. I will say that I do get a lot of ridiculous behavior at the tower of male characters trying to imitate certain...acts... I guess in my years of gaming I've pretty much learned to ignore this and brush it off as immature acts probably done by teenage players. They shouldn't do it, but this is the internet and people act doubly stupid when they are anonymous. It has never stopped me from gaming but I'm not really a casual gamer, I've been gaming since the floppy disk days and won't stop anytime soon. However, I think it does stop girls and women who want to give these games a try and takes some of the pleasure and fun out of the experience for them. I myself used to play under a very masculine gamer tag just to avoid the stupidity and be treated normally.

  • History tells us that any time people feel they need to 'pass' as something else, something is very very wrong.

I agree but I also feel things have improved over the years. Which is why I play as Razor_Grrl now. The gaming community as a whole has matured. When I started gaming most of us gamers were young and it was rare to come across another female gamer. I'd be followed all over "town" and asked personal questions about myself. I'd have guys giving me items even though I never played with or seen them in game before. I knew it was because I was a girl. It was awkward. Now we've all aged and set better examples for younger players. It's not super rare to run across a woman gaming and only the fools are scrambling for our attentions or trying to make their characters simulate lewd acts. And just to add (as a response to other comments I've seen on this thread) I can give and take flak as good as anyone else. That's a normal part of gaming, and any competition really, and I never would want to be exempt from that because of my gender. I don't believe that is what is being asked for when discussing how women gamers are treated. Also, I think an all girl fire team would be awesome and I'm game if any other girls are!
