I'm with ya. Terraria did this. You have 2 of every armor slot. One for "wear" and one for "cosmetic". Whatever is in "wear" gives you applicable bonuses. Whatever is in "cosmetic" is what is displayed. Great idea. I thought of this too because of my love of Terraria. Hadn't thought about dropping the idea here. Great post!

  • Yeah I see this as a huge conflict though from the veteran player community. The exotics are meant to be "exotic" partially because they look unique. They stand out from every other item like it. It's a pain to earn so it should look incredible. Now the hurdle: If someone doesn't actually have the item, and they are simply "looking" like they own it, everyone will be wearing the stuff and thus downplay the significance of the item. So, to combat this, I like the idea of equipping "your owned items" only in a "cosmetic" slot vice a costume. This means players will recognize that you still earned what you're showing off, despite what bonuses you are running under the hood. Allow me to drop my Dodge Viper engine in my Porsche for fun, but don't allow someone to buy a Corvette body and throw it on a Pinto. It takes away from the MMO experience of "earning" your right to look awesome. Veteran players should stand out because they did just that. They earned it.

They have earned their exotics now they are paying to "wear" them all. No-one will be able to wear gear they don't own, you still have to acquire the gear to begin with, it isn't a way to bypass actually owning the exotic.

  • Ah ha! Ok I'm with you. So the terraria thing still works. Just dump it in the "show this one" slot, while something else is in the "wear this one" slot.
