Well...Is it worth? Yes. Should you try to get one without buying it? Definitely. But if you want to do endgame content and don't have a legendary primary then go for it. You need legendary weapons to get through the hardest parts of the raid, for sure, unless you are very skilled. The raid usually gives tons of Ascendant Materials, so you don't need to worry as much about those the further your progress.
Edit: Auto Rifles and Scout Rifles are the only weapons worth using in the raid. Handcannons don't have sustained damage, and takes to long to kill because you won't always be able to get the precision shots, and they are useless against the bosses. Pulse Rifles are..meh. Small clips, not much reserve ammo, unreliable damage because you can miss shots etc etc.

I personally use scouts or my raid drop AR. But if ARs are your bag that's fine too

Depends on your special and heavy weapons. Like I said, you can get by if you are good, and have good secondary weapons, but having a good primary makes a huge difference especially if you are in a lower-level group that won't do as much damage.
