It seems I'm having a very different experience with the game than most...

I'm a software developer in my 30s. I work all day, come home, hit the gym or go for a bike ride, make dinner, and take care of the dog. After dinner, I boot up the PS4, create a party with 4 to 6 of my friends... work friends, childhood friends, friends I've just met... We hop in a PS4 party, then we all load up the game. We battle through all of the game's missions together. We take on the strikes. We take on the queens wrath missions. We're working on building up our light levels. We do patrols and bounties, and we all enter the Crucible together. I am having an absolute blast playing Destiny with my friends. Maybe the difference is that I have a dedicated set of friends whom I can play the game with that make it so much fun, but reading through this board is very interesting to me. It seems that many of the people writing here are having a very different experience than I am having. Is it simply because I'm playing with my friends that I find what the developers at Bungie have given us so entertaining?

  • The game has a very solid foundation for sure. I have a lot of fun playing with my friends as well. However, the game has a lot less content than originally advertised. The missions, patrols, and bounties have become repetitive. Two of my friends have pretty much stopped playing. That's the main problem people are running into I think.

    • I'm having a similar experience. I play with my wife mostly and with our cousin and/or a friend of ours. We just hit 20 last week. I do have to agree though that the story was short and there wasn't much to it at all. For what they spent on Destiny, they could have at least looked at Borderlands and given us a story with a similar length. I didn't really hit any loot issues until I hit 20. In the almost 2 weeks of being 20 and playing 2-4 hours, 4-6 days a week, none of us have seen any legendary loot and I'm the only one who has blues that got me to a light level of 21. It really feels like progression has halted. We want to do the queens missions, but can't because it's lv24. How are we supposed to get to 24? The strikes take us 30 minutes to an hour so we can only do 2 or 3 a night and we don't always have the energy to do that many. We still like the game and I really want it to be more. But they do need to fix things. I honestly feel like no one at Bungie has played WoW or Borderlands in the past 10 years. Because what Destiny was advertised as and in reality is, is some mash up of those two. But they parts of those two games that they got wrong seems as if they never played either of those, as anyone who has, would easily think about how to implement them. I'm holding out hope.

      • Gaming with friends makes the difference. I am with the "fatal talent gaming Community" (FTGC) We are made up of guys and gals like you and your friends. Been with them for a few years now. Over all we have fun. I mean. That's the point. Find some people you enjoy gaming with. Have FUN! Yes we experience technical difficulties like everyone else. For the greater part. We have that gaming experience just like you and your friends. a whole lot of fun and a bunch of entertainment. Too bad you're not on the one. It might be good gaming with you and your crew. We do have some FTG that are one the PS4 console. You may even run across them. Good gaming youngster! Peace!

      • Many of the people writing here are not representative of the population as a whole. The one's who are enjoying it aren't likely to stop playing and post on a forum, they're too busy enjoying the game. Bungie certainly gave us an entertaining game, and like with every piece of entertainment, there are some who entered the transaction with a certain set of expectations that weren't met and they'll do nothing but complain now. I too play with a solid group and I do that makes the game a lot more fun, but I'm loving the game as is and am looking forward to the upcoming content.

Nope, Destiny epically failed. It is obvious that something cataclysmic happened at Bungie. If something bad did not happen at Bungie then this is the most pathetic game I have ever seen, sorry for the negativity.

        • While I wholeheartedly agree with your comment on Destiny being much more fun with friends and in smaller doses, as a developer doesn't some of the design decisons seem baffulling to you. Things like an in-game Grimore, a better designed RNG(even Bioware's notorious store RNG has better odds) and matchmaking for public events. I find multiplayer odd as well. The Maps are all amazing as expected from Bungie, but again the RNG raises it's ugly head and no Private matches(remove rewards and exp. I've seen it done before). I'm not trying to troll but as Design students my friend and I are just stunned at the lack of some basic core things. Just like to get your thoughts.

        • I'm enjoying the game mostly playing solo, I team up with randoms to play strikes and PVP and never use mics. None of the missions really require strategy other than point and shoot but I heard the Raid is a different beast.

          • I created a clan before the game released and I was line wolfing it most of these past weeks, but now I've started playing more with my clanmates abd everything has changed. They are a great group of guys and I really think if we all keep playing together, the vault of glass will be a blast.

            • Dude, are you my long lost more active twin? Im golf pro, in my 30s. I work all day, skip the gym, make dinner, and take care of my dog, then I hop on a PS4 party and play destiny too!!! But seriously, I'm your same boat man. I got a good group of about 6 guys. Not everyone plays every night, but most do. Me and a couple others are raid ready sitting at 27+, just waiting on the last couple. Having a core group makes the game much more fun. I've had a blast this last month playing the game and look forward to many more nights of playing. I'm sure that ultimately we will probably put it down before the xpack, but once it hits, we shall return with a vengeance.

            • The game is fun for me but some people just can't get past the whole conspiracy theory of cut content and perceived value. It's all good because forums were made for the positive and the negative.

            • Love the game also and have very little to complain about. Unfortunately I cant afford a PS4, so I play on PS3 which gives me a great experience as well. If I made a 100k a year developing software like you guys, maybe I could afford one also....lol !!! Can't wait till they do the patch for the engrams.

            • I wholeheartedly agree. Playing by yourself can get sluggish, but add some friends and mics, and this game is a blast. Whether banding together to complete a weekly strike, and casually working on bounties in Patrol Mode, this game is fantastic.

            • I think the difference for you is two fold, same as me; age (and by extension - expectations), and somewhat related experience? - I'm 31 and a game dev (well, transitioning QA Analyst/Specialist) and I'm also really enjoying the game. I think that some of the criticisms and complaints that people are making are truly accurate (the story or lack of one at times, being the best complaint), but the volume and how the complaints are being presented is ludicrous...even by trolls and/or internet standards ...yeah, whining and groaning is nothing new, but in the amount that Destiny has been receiving is nuts to me. Then again, unlike a lot of people (I guess?) I keep my expectations low. I also think being in a dev industry makes us more forgiving because we understand how some "things" and features end up the way they do and that no matter how hard you try, and how many hours of OT you and your coworkers try to cram into a week (forsaking social life, significant others, and sometimes sanity), it just happens sometimes for any number of reasons. I think the biggest difference of how you view this game lies in what kind of gamer you are - personally, I play a little bit of everything (though shooters the majority of the time), so I enjoy and am fully familiar the mixture of RPG/MMO elements with the shooter elements in Destiny, but plenty of comments on this forum have made it clear that many Destiny players were only Shooter or only MMO fans and weren't comfortable with the other half... (like multiple people complaining about drop rates, or how they grinded for 45 mins somewhere and got nothing - are you kidding me? 45 mins isn't even a noob-grind in a game like World of Warcraft. You could grind for 5-7 hrs and never get the drop you were after. THAT's a grind, and that's not even the worst example) ...this appeared to be compounded into a worse problem with the lack of explanations and/or tutorials from Bungie (which I didn't personally need, but I could see how some things could have used an explanation even though some people probably wouldn't have paid attention to them or skipped them and still complained). For example, in Crucible I realized right away that there would still be advantages in gear and weapons even if base stats were even and mentally prepared for the occasional I'm gonna get wrecked arse kicking, but the crucible handler or another NPC should have probably thrown that warning out for everyone else. Idk - the hype was a problem too, but I don't buy into hype anyhow, so it didn't really affect me or give me unrealistic expectations.

            • Thanks you! I have two friends in different states that we all happen to work the same schedule. We get off work, talk on the phone on way home planning what to do in Destiny that night. I put my baby to bed and turn on the PS4 and we jump in to Strikes, Crucible, Patrols, gearing up, etc... We're having so much fun! I think like you said it's because we're playing with a dedicated group of friends every time to bring the experience to the next level and like someone else mentioned before me only having a limited amount of time to play each day really gets you always craving for more!

            • Of course, some people would sit hours on end shooting into a cave, how *blam*ing boring is that.. I got everything I got from just playing the game. People have a hard time getting legendaries because they expect one to just pop out of an enemy they kill when they can just work to get marks to BUY legendaries and maybe if you're lucky a purple engram will drop. Just yesterday I was collecting Relic Irons on mars, killed a bot and got a engram, and in that engram I got a Exotic Shotgun. Was I expecting to get a purple engram? No.. Was I expecting to get an Exotic weapon? No, lol not at all. If you're just patient the good geat will come to you.

There are people out there who bought the game who can't play it due to errors, for example. Nerfing the components you get when you break down the Queen's gear and (supposedly) nefing some weapons in PvP are the last things the technical department should be worried about, yet, are among some of the first things to get patched. <---- That's some grade-A bullshit right there. Also, twitch-reflex PvP is so nineteen-nineties it still wearing grunge and listening to Pearl Jam. For a "next-gen" game Destiny's PvP sure feels like every other gen. I wouldn't even be complaining about that were it not for fact that PvP is forced down my throat at every bend and turn. I complain because I love. If I didn't love this game I wouldn't be whinning about the improvements I'd like to see happen much less have logged the time I have on it. I've met a lot of cool people playing Destiny, made some new friends, had a blast doing the weekly heroic with them but I'm not gonna turn a blind eye to some of the glaring problems the game has. It's my hope that someone in Bungie is reading these posts, considers some of the more constructive criticism and, just maybe, makes a fix here or there.

              • no the issue is everyone has a self entitled attude now adays, i mean how do you think the whole 1% issue started a few years ago? people expect the world to revolve around them and only them, there for everything should be catered directly to them. So this start up of a enw franchise should be directed to them and only them. Bungie has been trend setters, when Halo came out it was a game changer. some people will tell you they kept it the whole franchise, but just the first one set the new standard, with destiney Bungie is trying to do it again. they are taking shooters as we know them today and trying to evolve them past a pvp based game. I for one enjoy the hell out of this game if i am bored of pve i do some pvp, but like you said i have a few freinds on here and there 2-3 usually.. and we just have a blast, we dont worry about scores or stats, we play and enjoy each others company. People claim they want proximaty chat, but all that will do is force people like me to creat a PSN chat group so it mutes the anoying people blairiy music in the backround.

                • I think not having inflated expectations helps a lot. I knew nothing of the now-infamous 2013 ViDoc of Destiny making all the incredible promises. I got a PSN text from a friend mentioning that he had an extra Destiny Beta code, and would I like to try; I answered yes, figuring what's the worst that can happen. Fell completely in love with the gameplay in Beta, was already planning builds (I'm a circa-1997 Armored Core gearhead) based on the skill tree mappings which came out of the Beta (and the few glimpses people caught of those lovely Exotics), and pre-purchased the full game on 9/1. Come 9/9 at about 12:15 am I was blazing away with my first toon and loving it. I haven't stopped loving it since. I see and fully acknowledge the flaws, and while I think quite a few of the complainants make far too much of them (or at least have wildly overblown reactions), I understand that the objections are valid and the game has clear issues. Sadly, wherever lies the fault, it seems the original (awesome) plan for Destiny was heavily undercut by leadership (and Activision) sticking their hand in and forcing the game into development hell. Then Activision of course pressured for a product at deadline, and we got what we got. Honestly I think it's a bit like it or lump it at this point. As said above, I'm a devotee of the Armored Core series - I'm used to half-baked, poorly playtested games which somehow still have a ton of intoxicating fun-factor and potential, and seeing new revisions break as many new issues as they fix old ones. Destiny does have blemishes, but at its worst I wouldn't put it in the realm of AC Silent Line or Project Phantasma for brokenness and unbalance, or of AC2 (not AA) for glitchiness. It's a decent game for a soloist who's willing to be patient and farm like crazy, and a good game for friendly, dedicated playgroups (it's just like Facebook, with more Rocket Launchers!). I believe the AMA Reddit information dump from "404Architect" is probably mostly or all accurate, and a badly flawed game was cleaned up as best possible by dedicated (if disappointed) and talented designers. I also believe that many of those same talented, dedicated people are currently working with what they have to right the ship as best possible, and get her on a safe and worthwhile course to a strong future for the franchise. I think it sucks beyond any description - if true - that so much time, energy and creative talent was spent on a project which ultimately was ripped out by its roots and re-specced to so vastly different a core proposal as to be barely recognizable as the same product; but even still, what remains is fun and engaging. It's accessible for FPS n00bies who don't have the blitzkrieg reflexes of Teenage Mutant Ninja CoDers, and that's thoroughly welcome. Also, for some reason (probably the Tower hubworld) Destiny gives me a nice warm Phantasy Star Online vibe. I did love me some PSO. Ah, days of Dreamcasts past.
