It seems I'm having a very different experience with the game than most...

I'm a software developer in my 30s. I work all day, come home, hit the gym or go for a bike ride, make dinner, and take care of the dog. After dinner, I boot up the PS4, create a party with 4 to 6 of my friends... work friends, childhood friends, friends I've just met... We hop in a PS4 party, then we all load up the game. We battle through all of the game's missions together. We take on the strikes. We take on the queens wrath missions. We're working on building up our light levels. We do patrols and bounties, and we all enter the Crucible together. I am having an absolute blast playing Destiny with my friends. Maybe the difference is that I have a dedicated set of friends whom I can play the game with that make it so much fun, but reading through this board is very interesting to me. It seems that many of the people writing here are having a very different experience than I am having. Is it simply because I'm playing with my friends that I find what the developers at Bungie have given us so entertaining?

  • Yes, to be brief, doing most things with friends or people you can relate to always makes things better than if experienced by yourself. Bonds, memories, etc. I think its awesome that if you watch/play a bad movie/game by yourself, you feel you wasted time. But if with friends, you can laugh at it and actually enjoy the exerience in a completely different way.

  • I pretty much do the same thing. i've made a couple of friends doing that and since we have been able to complete the raid, complete the weekly nightall strike and in general just have fun playing with each other. I have come on usually looking for info on just about anything. with the forums help my team was able to beat the raid with tip and tricks that others had used to befeat Atheon, I have responded to people's question that were asking for help that I happened to know. I think part of reason that you some of us seem to be having a very different expierience than others is because not all of us get hung up on one little thing that we might not like and decide to rant and rave about it. the ones that enjoy the game, enjoy it for what it is and what it can become. We don't feel the need to post every little thing on here. I'm on here because I'm sitting at work waiting for something to do.

  • Players that like the game don't post about how much they like it. They are too busy playing and having fun.

  • I think the thing is that most of the people who are enjoying the game are either: doing just that rather than posting on the forums, or don't care what sorts of negative things people on the forums have to say, because it doesn't effect their positive gaming experience.

I do enjoy this game because of the simple fact that I don't sit in front of it all day every day. I'll admit as a long time gamer, this game has its flaws that need to be addressed, but so far it is keeping my attention. Last night was the first time I turned my mic on and played with a buddy on my friends list. I had a blast. Where I work 9 hours Monday to Friday and sometimes Saturdays, most of the time when I get online there are either friends that are playing a different game or are just not online so I'm playing on my own. I enjoy playing with other people and if anyone wants to do weekly challenges, raids, strikes or whatever and just have fun talking about the game I'll be happy add people. :) 7pm Atlantic time. • Spent 4 hours in the Vault for the first time last night. 5 strangers, 3 of whom I met in a random clan i joined that day. Same 6 guys in, same 6 guys out. Had a blast even though I'm exhausted at work right now. But I'm looking at my gun and my chest piece and my white shader on bungie.net like....'damn I can't wait till next reset Tuesday, I need to get an exotic from Xur this weekend and grind shards...' ...but go play Madden or CoD if you want "content" and "story"

  • I can tell you what the problem is. many people got way too much time and they want to be entertained 12 hours a day for weeks or even months. They dont realise how hard it is to create such a thing. I personally think that destiny is by no means perfect but I have alot of fun playing it. Of course it get repetitive and boring if you play 8+ hours everyday. the strikes will be more rewarding soon and content will be added. Hardcore gamers are the ones that are already bored with their fully geared characters

While I don't have the same kinda feeling I do as some of you in regards to liking Destiny enough to be a fan of Bungie. I find Destiny somewhat enjoyable although with much room for improvement in many aspects. But by far I wouldn't call it gamebreaking problems. The thing I don't quite understand is when people hate the game so much and vent vent vent but still play it? If you really hate the game so much. Return it? sell it? Why are people still playing it and condemn the people for enjoying the game for what it is? You're hardly going to go to a burger joint order a cheeseburger and complain there's cheese now are you? Tires me out with the constant people whinging. Yes I believe constructive criticism is needed for games to improve and that whiners will always be around. But whinging for the sake of whinging while continuing to play the game? Really?.....Just don't play the game. No one is forcing a gun to your head and tell you to play it.

  • It is definitely most fun if played with friends. That being said I think most people playing are enjoying it. The whiners are just the most vocal.

  • All the people who are combining are the people who are the COD fans and have nothing better to do until the next COD comes out. I love this game I play with a friend and we go through the strikes and level up, get new gear, and just have a lot of fun doing it.

  • I am like you. I work all day. I have 3 kids in enough sports to bankrupt a small country. When the kids and wife are in bed for the night I excitedly hop on and play for 1-2 hours with a small group of friends and always leave happy. Its all about balance.

I'm with you, man. I'm having a great time. We have an active clan, and we get to do the events together. The game really comes alive when you play it with friends!

  • Unforunately, not everyone has 6 friends that play this game. I personally have 3 and none of them really play in my time zone. But maybe if they had put some kind of feature into the game then it wouldn't have been a problem. Voice communication... anything!

I am with you man. I've been playing with a few friends and we are having a blast, totally addicted to the grind. All working on getting our raid gear complete, doing nightfall and always attempting higher difficulties, which is always mad mad times and incredibly fun! Patrols, public events and whatnot. (Hell, sometimes I just go to the moon, stay where the accelerator is, and just sit there watching the time cycle go by and how it affects the entire mood/lightning of the place. When the sun starts rising above the mountains on the far back. How the earth rotates in the distance. How the satellites go by. It's just freaking beautiful. Stunning even.) Today I dedicated a few hours to the game. Got the weekly heroic and nightfall done, and then went on to clear half the raid with a few friends. And good times were had by all. Good times indeed. Is the game perfect? No. Far from it. Could there be improvements? Tons. I hope it gets supported so they can further develop the entire vision they have for it. I sincerely do. Because I am absolutely in love with the foundation of this new world they have created for us. Most if not all of my issues with it are easily fixable in upcoming patches (proximity voice communication, expanded matchmaking for more activities in the future, a higher cap of permitted players in any given map, specially patrol, loot system which they are working on, a grimoire in-game interface, and last but not least, more content, which will come eventually, and I will be more than happy to pay for it). At the end of the day, everything is a matter of perception. Some people, including most of my friends thankfully, are loving the game, and some people, are feeling robbed and entitled and loosing themselves in obscure conspiracy theories. None being the wiser. jmferris said it best in this very thread and I quote:
[At the end of the day, it comes down to if I feel I've gotten my money's worth in entertainment value, and that answer is that I certainly have. That is not a negative reflection on me, or on those who feel contrary to that.
To each its own. But yes, I am loving it, my friends are loving it, and we are having a blast.

  • I have a similar background to you. Software architect in my 30s. Work from home all day, don't hit the gym that often, make dinner, and take care of the three dogs. I'll boot up the PS4 after the night has calmed down, or starting about 4a on the weekends - as I don't sleep much in my "old age". But, our stories diverge at that point. I tend to play solo, now doing bounties, patrol missions, and strikes. However, I enjoy the game immensely, still. Am probably going to start a new character soon, and will enjoy every minute of that, too. Am not big into the PvP aspects of the game - just never has been my preference. Yes, I suck at it - and am not ashamed of that. Logically speaking, I find little enjoyment in real people randomly jumping up and down in place half the time. No intent on insulting anyone; if that is what you like, good on you. What I find great about Destiny is the upside that tends to get glossed over by people - namely, the controls are phenomenal, and it plays like a dream. Sure the story is thin, and I am sure that it will improve with time. Don't particular care that I will have to purchase DLC, either. At the end of the day, it comes down to if I feel I've gotten my money's worth in entertainment value, and that answer is that I certainly have. That is not a negative reflection on me, or on those who feel contrary to that. As a software industry professional, I am guessing that you may look at it the same way I do. And that is how Destiny is an awesome framework and platform. I see very little in the game that cannot be addressed by updates, expansions, and downloadable content. In my eyes, I see it as something that will end up in the console frequently, for a long time to come. Doesn't get said enough - but kudos to Bungie. There is no way that they will ever make everyone happy. Sales figures are enough to keep this game going for a while, I assume. And, on top of that, if they do monitor the feedback of the community, it will only help to improve the game in its current iterations, and subsequent versions. I tend to lurk on here since I've gotten the game, more than anything else. No problem with people voicing concern - to each his/her own. Guess that us older "fogies" just do not want to get caught up in the hostility.

Yea, playing with friends is more entertaining than playing alone. What's more, some of the harder content is impossible to get through without them, like raids, for example.

    • Bungie said it themselves; the game is meant to be played with friends. Most gamers however are anti-social which is why they hate it.

        • It is a good game, playing with friends is a lot more of a laugh but I play solo when there's no one around, yes the missions/strikes are the same but nothing quite like slamming the difficulty up and feeling like a proper badass taking out hoards upon hoards by yourself. Once the engram patch goes live the only thing worth waiting for is DLC's to expand an already visually impressive game world. For those who disagree about the visuals go to the moon stand still and look up at the cosmos!

          • I am having fun too... I feel this game rides on the "play with your friends" motif a great deal. If you a solo player and burn through content you will find yourself bored and I think this has caught a lot of people by surprise.
