It seems I'm having a very different experience with the game than most...

I'm a software developer in my 30s. I work all day, come home, hit the gym or go for a bike ride, make dinner, and take care of the dog. After dinner, I boot up the PS4, create a party with 4 to 6 of my friends... work friends, childhood friends, friends I've just met... We hop in a PS4 party, then we all load up the game. We battle through all of the game's missions together. We take on the strikes. We take on the queens wrath missions. We're working on building up our light levels. We do patrols and bounties, and we all enter the Crucible together. I am having an absolute blast playing Destiny with my friends. Maybe the difference is that I have a dedicated set of friends whom I can play the game with that make it so much fun, but reading through this board is very interesting to me. It seems that many of the people writing here are having a very different experience than I am having. Is it simply because I'm playing with my friends that I find what the developers at Bungie have given us so entertaining?

  • Destiny is exponentially more enjoyable when played with close friends, or brothers, I have found. But I still have fun on my own, mind you, just not as much fun.

  • I suspect this is where the RNG random rewards fail people. And the solution to it, is as you describe - play it for fun with friends and other players you meet online. Where leveling up gives you a sense of reward/accomplishment, the RNG is essentially gambling and does not give any much sense of fulfillment, unless you happen to 'win the lottery.' Otherwise, there is no achievement, usually frustration and futility based on some vague expectancy. Send another bullet into a cave or feed another coin in the slot machine; you just get what you get not what you want and the house always wins. There's no process of accomplishment or sense of achievement, no sense of control or involvement. I noticed this first in Mass Effect's multiplayer and got caught up in it, til I realized when I played for fun by myself or with friends, I got adequate equipment, eventually some good equipment and once in a while something I was hoping for. Frequently in the Tower or on patrols, I check out some of the people there and see most of them are not in clans. So I'm guessing many of these are 'lone wolf' types just experiencing a small slice of Destiny. There's a great sense of fulfillment and achievement when you make it through a strike or raid. The game's lack of communication in strikes or areas does hinder the potential of meeting new people.

    • It could be that you don't have high expectations for games. Your standards are lower. That would explain it all right there. Some people are happy still playing pong. Others want a completely immersive experience and gripping story and loads of content that will keep them busy for hundreds of hours.

    • I agree. I can play the same maps with my friends and watch them get legendary or exotic engrams while we or I don't get shit. I think bungie needs to make this game fair for everyone including in crucible. Until they do bungie can stick destiny up their asses sideways. Also why do these -blam!-tard game designers have to make the weapons and armor so damn hard to get. Can somebody explain that to me. I can't play the game all day long because I don't live at home with mommy and daddy.

      • People are putting "story" before GAMEplay in a GAME, they think that a GAME is only good with a good story. Bioshock infinite, bad gun/gameplay, good story 9/10. Destiny, good gameplay, bad story, 6/10. For many people they prioritise story even though they just playthrough it on legendary just for Mark VI armour in PvP and bragging rights. Also for people complaining about bad balance in the crucible, well everyone has same hp and damage is all the same so if you get a .5 KD you only have yourself to blame.

      • You are not alone. The negative neck beard basement dwellers are just the loudest around here. There are many people who enjoy the game as you do, we just don't feel the need to start 20 topics a day on how great it is because we're actually playing the game. On the road in a hotel for work so I find myself here. Stop tormenting me with your sweet nectar, Destiny!

      • I've been soloing the game and having a blast! I'm part of a huge guild and have close friends I play with in SWTOR, but I'm enjoying the freedom of the lone wolf here.

      • I mainly play by myself except for the occassional hang out with a buddy of mine when he can get on. Both solo and with friends seems to be great experience from what I can tell, because I have tremendous fun either way. Unfortunately with all the poo flinging at Bungie and Destiny that is going on, that is one of the things that gets no attention; how Bungie deliberately and expertly crafted the game to appeal to many types of gamers without penalty to any type. You are anti-social? Not a problem. Don't lke PvP? Again, not a problem. Love social gaming? That'll work. Wanna slaughter every Gardian that dares show his/her face/mask/cowl/glowing eyed metal thing in the Crusible? Have at it. You have no great advantage or dissadvantage for doing or not doing whatever. Brilliant game design in my opinion.

      • Yesterday i started the raid with a group of 5 other people that i don't know. It was a really good run and we had fun till we got to the endboss. On that little sucker we stuck for quite a while and nearly quit our raid run ... but finally after about an hour our team was good enough to beat that shitty creature. it was kind of amazing.

        • You are not alone. It is exponentially more fun with friends. Even new "friends" that you didn't know before Destiny make it better. It really wasn't designed to be played solo, in my opinion. Can you? Sure, have at it, but I think you're missing out that way. I think most of us who feel similarly just got tired of arguing with the complainers and don't say much about it anymore until somone starts a thread like this. (Not the people giving legit feedback, the actual cry babies that plague this forum.)

        • I think it's because people are too focused on the loot than the experience. Some of the most fun I've had on this game is when a group of some guys and I tried the VoG on hard and, realizing we were way too low of a level, just started messing around. In a culture that is too entitled, they no longer care about the experience, only that Bungie gives them everything right now.

          • Do you guys ever talk about how awesome the story is? Or ever mention how it would be great if there were more Strikes?

          • I love this. I find this game an absolute joy when playing with a bunch of random friends that can kick back and laugh about how awesome we are as a team. Whether it be murdering VoG or going into Crucible as teams of 5 or 6 to face wreck, the experience is grand. Though for some reason I am capable of grinding patrols like its nobodis past time (yay for Vaguard 7 and Cruci 4!). Shout out to all Suros Regime users. Su7os Regime is recruiting on ps4! Git gud~

          • The reason the forums are so negative is because all of us who love the game are busy playing while all the people who don't like it come to whine on the forums for some reason

              • I'd have to agree with this guy... The main reason people aren't liking the game is because they are focusing to much on finding it's flaws and not allowing themselves to enjoy the game. That's my honest opinion, although it probably doesn't matter anyways...

              • Fire teams for missions and strikes are limited to 3. That's my only gripe, I thoroughly enjoy the game but look foreword to how it improves

                • Gamer expectations are wildly out of proportion with the realities of game development. These are mostly gamers who have far more free time than a healthy person should. I just ignore those with unreasonable expectations. Makes my life much less stressful.

I have three friends playing, one has already fallen off. I can't find a dedicated group to play with. lol. I'm not sure what Destiny others are playing either, because I'm having a ton of fun.

                  • Yep. Playing with friends makes a huge difference. Also, the hype. It seems that a lot of people thought that this was going to be a ground breaking, impossibly mind blowing game. I mean, I saw a guy who said that he bought a next gen console just to play Destiny. When you buy into the hype and set your expectations that high, you're bound to be disappointed! My friend and I had paid no attention to this game literally until the day it came out and bought it on impulse. Still having a blast since then... It's not a perfect game and it's sad that apparently some content got cut out, but calling it the worst game ever or something is really overkill.
