I am actually happy most of that original story has been rewritten and cut out. Nothing is more boring, then having everything chewed out and handed over to you right from the beginning story wise. It makes it extremely boring if you know everything right from the beginning. Then there is no suspense and sense of discovery left anymore. Exactly like that writer in that topic of the first screenshot says. It would have been just another Halo game, where you play a story campain and pretty much know everything up front and what's going to happen. /shrug

  • The Halo games had actual plots, satisfying and sensible plots. Destiny has no -blam!-ing plot whatsoever, it is a pitiful jumble of cutscenes obviously put together at the last moment. This is not some kind of new and better way of telling you the story while also inviting the player to explore, this is simply an utter lack of effort and a complete deception by Bungie.

  • I am not saying this story is any better. I am saying that that first draft of the story that was quoted in the OP was even worse.

  • hate to be harsh but this is a stupid comment. the linked image of the original story is 10x better than the cut-up crap we have now.

  • Are you just a complete idiot or what? Have you ever heard of pacing? Even if they did front load a lot of stuff (which btw, Mass Effect did and to great success) I'd still rather have too much info than not enough - the current "story" is so appalling vague that it's difficult to make sense out of any of it - and that's not something I normally have problems with. People often complain that the MGS story is too convoluted but I have no issues with it at all. This game on other hand... Like the Cabal. The most we get on them is that "They're 800 lbs and they destroy planets and moons just for getting in their way." OOOOOOH, great backstory there. We get even less about the Fallen & the Hive. The Vex at least some hinting of what they could be but even then it's still all too mysterious (just little blurbs about them once being organic and apparently controlled by a single mind). Context is everything, and for whatever ridiculous reasons Bungie gutted the majority of it leaving us with a senseless garble of ill-paced nonsense. Why Bungie cut all this out is beyond me, unless Activision was rushing them to meet a deadline and so they had to gut it to meet it in which case that is complete crap and only reaffirms my suspicions that this game was rushed out at least a year early. So much wasted potential and unnecessary bad PR...

If you follow this link (Very first one in the OP: http://postimg.org/image/80it9ix8x/ ) If you read that, then in the first draft (as that is what it is, as it was still Alpha state back then) pretty much the entire plot of the story was revealed within the first couple missions! The whole point of that test phase in which they invited a Select Group of People, is to test this first draft on the story upon and see how they reacted. Pretty obvious they didn't react all that positivily, as this poster himself already pointed out, in that it feeled just like Halo. So they went back to the drawing Board and started over. That's why these People had to sign a NDA! As otherwise what you see now is exactly what happens! People pulling everything out of context, try to find reasons for their own failed expactations and come up With all kinds of crazy conspiracy theories! As do you really think this is the first ever game, to have it's first story draft revised or rewritten? This is very common! I mean, christ! In Movie Productions this happens all the time! That entire Movie scripts have been thrown away and rewritten! Just goes to show Bungie should never invite gamers into these kind of tests, as no one can be trusted! NDA or not! /shrug

  • You must hate literally every story ever then. We aren't asking for everything on day one, we are asking for what we were promised. They promised us the first chapter and gave us the first page.

  • So every great story written tells you everything that is about to happen up front in the first Chapter? Really? /shrug

  • No, but it tells you something. Perhaps chapter is the incorrect word to use here, destiny is the first game in a 4 part series according to Bungie. Making it the first installment. In that regard, we were promised book one, and got one page. Each book tells you what is going on, provides context, meaning and reasons to be invested. Even opening chapters are supposed to accomplish at least that, or else it fails as a book. But every installment is supposed to be a well written story with a fleshed out plot. While leaving room for more of course. But destiny fails miserably in that regard.

  • This isn't just a single Chapter. Come on now! I agree this is definitely not the best written story to go into the history books. But there is definitely a story campain here. Just not brought in a way we used to like in Halo and Mass Effect. Which is a bit dissapointing yes. Bungie relied way to much on the Grimoire. And that could have been improved by making it available ingame. #SPOILER ALERT# First Chapter. You being revived by a strange little cube, called a ghost and he helps you finding your way to The Tower in one piece. Second Chapter. You being told by the Speaker about the Golden Age of mankind, how the Traveler brought this Golden Age into being, but then the Darkness came, wiped out mankind almost into near extinction and The Traveler being critically injured! Barely able to hold back the Darkness any longer. This city is all that's left. Third Chapter. You raiding various Archives to find out about what is going on. Uncovering a shard of the Traveler, that was being used against it. Fourth Chapter. A stranger brings you to Venus where you make an important discovery, revolving the Vex and something in The Garden that is killing the Traveler. Fifth Chapter. You find Your way to the Awoken and the Queen and her Brother tell you were this Garden is and how to gain Access. Sixth Chapter. Obtain the head of the Vex Gate Lord and bring it back to the Awoken, who turn it into a key to gain Access to The Garden. Seventh Chapter. Break your way through the Cabal fortifications to reach the Gate. Eighth Chapter. Enter the gate to The Garden and put a stop to the Vex's plans, so The Traveler can start his healing process. #END SPOILER# This is a quick recap. A lot more details and lore can be found in the Grimoire Cards.

  • thanks for this, the problem with the game is it's hard to follow this plot because of the disjointed way it's told.

And in all of that, we have no reason to be invested , to care about what happens, no likable characters. All we have is a disjointed plot that never bothers telling you anything and with many plot threads that go nowhere, such as Rasputin. Hence why it's an overblown first page, because it tells us about as much as page 1 in most books. It's just stretched out to boring lengths.

  • ^this. No characters you even remotely care about. Or npc allies. It seriously feels like despite all the other guardians and vendors you are utterly alone in the galaxy.
