I agree. I was discussing this with my friend last night.
In Mass Effect 3, EDI used the body of the Infiltration Unit, and as it was designed as an Infiltration Unit, it's form as a Human Female made sense.
However, an entire species of sentient robots have no need for gender, and so why do they have a gender?
If it doesn't make passable sense within your game world, don't include it. You can argue aesthetics, but that's a flawed point. There's no reason whatsoever that The Stranger is trying to cash in on the "Miranda's Ass" phenomenon from Mass Effect, and yet, the cutscenes seem relatively keen to show you "the dark side of the moon".
So much shapely tush for a robot is obvious boner bait for techno-fetishists.
And yet, no Afterlife. Awoken Strippers anyone?

The Vex have no genders. The Exo are not Vex. There were made in human's image. Humans have gender. It's not about what's necessary.
