I fully disagree with you about item rarity. It is rediculous how difficult it is to obtain even decent gear in this game. I have put in close to 30hours of play time and I have found 0 legendary engrams, I have been offered 0 exotic weapons bounties. I got lucky and found a legendary chest armor from a blue engram...
My buddy, has played roughly the same amount as I have, maybe slitghtly more. He has 2 Exotics A legendary and he is currently working on his first exotic bounty. Why does he get all that stuff and I get nothing? We play together all the time, I was there when he found one of his exotics. But still... I have nothing to show for it. From what I can tell, the only way I will possibly get an exotic, is to buy it from Xur

The same thing happened to me. I must've got about 20 legendarys and they all got downgraded to worse weapons than what I was currently using. And my friend got 2 legendary weapons on his first 2 goes! I'm happy they changed it.

Grind the hell out of patrol missions my friend. Grind, grind and then grind some more. Then at vanguard rank two, grind the hell out of strikes, and you can but a single purple piece, next week grind again and buy two more (or one depending on if you buy helmet) rinse and repeat to upgrade all your gear

Not to shit on you, but 30 hours is nothing. Don't expect anything good after that little. After 48 hours, maybe, but not before. What really matters is how far you progressed through the "story," how many bounties you did, whats your rep, how many materials you have and so on. Its not your time that matters but your immersion level.
