Hunters are Underpowered (PvP)

Now this ties in with my other post, where I went in depth with over powered weapons. This time, I will be explaining how the Hunter is underpowered. After discussing it with my friends, I have found many disadvantages compared to the other classes. Let's begin, shall we? Now most of us, if not all, know that the stat specialty for Hunters is Agility. Now what benefits does that give us? Increased running speed and jump height. How does that help us in combat? Either running towards enemies for melee attacks, running towards them with a shotgun, or running the -blam!- away. That sounds great, but is it really? Not when you compare it to the other classes. Titans get armor, increasing health. Warlocks get recovery, which increases how fast your health recovers. Alongside that, Hunters would be considered more melee based than the other two classes, especially with Bladedancer. But are they really better than the other two? Hell no. The Sunsinger subclass gets an ability which allows them to get a damage shield from dealing damage with melee. Melee takes two hits to kill someone in PvP, unless you're fighting a Sunsinger. If the Sunsinger melees you, it takes three hits, but in that time, they can land two on you and kill you. Not so great. Of course there is the drawback of the cooldown, but you only need to get one melee kill, and move onto the next. The Striker subclass gets an ability (optional) which instantly kills you if they are sprinting towards you and they melee. This seems to have no cooldown (as referenced from a Striker), meaning the only drawback is having to sprint. The only problem with that is if there is a group around the people you want to kill. But seriously, how often do you see that unless it's Control? Not very often (or not in my experience anyways [I never see any team players]). This also isn't so great. Now let's go on to Hunters. The only good thing Hunters get are throwing knives, which take skill to use (unless you're close range). Once you're good enough with them, you can use Knife Juggler to reset its cooldown, that is if you can get good enough with it. Blink Strike is decent, but it still isn't as long range as a Warlock's. You can use Backstab, but who would choose Backstab over Fast Twitch (I mean come on, five second cooldown!)? Even so, Backstab only works on the enemy's back, which means you have to get behind them, which means you will also appear on the radar unless you cloak and run up behind them. That could work, unless you get spotted by another enemy (it doesn't make you completely invisible), then you can kiss your rear good bye because you're focusing one guy, while another guy will shoot you. It also isn't a good idea when they have a shotgun, because you'll most likely die. Now, on to stat specs. Titans spec for armor, Warlocks spec for recovery, and Hunters spec for agility. If a Hunter fully specs in agility, what combat bonuses will that give him? Well increased jump height really isn't a good idea for fighting because it leaves you in the air longer, and running faster will get you closer to an enemy to either melee or use a shotgun, but there's a downside to that. It leaves you having almost no armor or recovery, or both. That means if you rush towards someone, they will most likely kill you before you even get close to them. This is kind of the same with PvE. Agility just isn't as useful as Armor and Recovery inside of combat. It's only use is outside of combat. This means that the only way a Hunter can really come out with anything good is by trying his/her best to go with Armor and Recovery as much as he/she can. Even then it isn't as much as a Titan or Warlock. This leaves the Hunter with one option in terms of combat: long-range fighting. This also leaves a hole in your defenses since you will need to use either a scout rifle with a good scope, or a sniper rifle. Unless you have the Third Eye perk, or the Knucklehead Radar (which only works for primaries), you're out of the job. Now can Hunters still do good in Crucible if they dodge a lot? Kind of, yes. But not as much as Warlocks and Titans with their overwhelming power and defenses. Now another thing is the damage resistance with Bladedancer's Arc Blade. They say we get damage resistance, yet we can still be one-shotted by Shoulder Charge, the other classes supers, a shotgun to the face, a headshot from a sniper rifle, and a rocket launcher. The only "resistance" we're really getting is from small-arms weaponry such as assault rifles, scout rifles and hand cannons. Then there's also the few seconds long animation time which leaves us open. We won't survive long. Now you may begin posting rage comments like I know a lot of you will do. Constructive criticism is more appreciated than mindless ranting, though.

  • They're only underpowered in PvE. Arc Blade can easily slaughter entire teams and then some.

  • Well, a single hunter turned a match over at the very end with blade dancers arc blade. Their special skill is definitely OP.

    • Nah. I feel like i had an easier time playing with my lvl 20 hunter than i did with my 29 warlock. i did much better overall with the high agility but i guess it depends on your play style. I still prefer the warlock because o f space magic

    • I have yet to see a BD kill a group of people unless they were shooting a someone and the BE came up from behind. I think that the classes are balanced.

    • Lol I have a level 28 titan, and a level 9 hunter. Tried both on PvP and guess which one caused me to play better. C'mon guess. Yup, the hunter. Its so easy to juke enemies, run away, and use blade dancer. Aint no need for a buff.

        • This is a good point, but I'm a hunter and I always end up getting at least 15 kills a game and only 10 deaths. And I also agree that the damage resistance is underpowered, but not many people have rocket launchers and super charge moves lying around, and its very hard to snipe a hunter when he has the arc blade. But I still think hunters should have a better meele.

        • I do not agree. I have been playing Hunter for quite a while now and half the time I am on top of the leaderboards. The Golden Gun, the throwing Knife, the sticky grenade, the shining blade power thingy, everything is amazingly deadly if you are able to play with it. Hunters need to be played well are more human like than the rest of the characters.

        • I love how i can look at forum posts and see "How the hunter is underpowered" and "Nerf the hunter its op" all without scrolling past one page. Guys give it up. There is no class that is more powerful than the other. Its all about the people that play it. I havent had a match where one class has completely dominated over another. If there was one its because the player playing that class was good at the game. I can go to any class and perform just about the same as the other so quit the whining

          • Hunter's have the most damage output of any class in PVE. (especially Gunslingers) In PVP our stats are normalized so I don't notice that much of a difference between classes. I think Golden Gun is the most effective super currently available in PVP. It's 3 precise, one-shot kills. No other class can boast that killing potential.

LOL, want armor? Roll bladedancer. Your ult makes you more damage resilient than a Titan with full defensive spec while using fist of havoc .. Sounds underpowered.

                • K lol .. All player are balanced in crucible, only things that differ are the abilities each gun has and the abilities each class has. I believe the most over powered in crucible is actually the hunter. I have never strung together a 6 or 5 kill streak from my special.. The hunter on the other hand blade dances his way through a whole team if he wanted to lol ! In strike playlists, TITAN and Warlock have he upper hand ! Keep on mind this post is opinion based and I'm sure there are a lot of people in crucible that har the hunters golden gun and knife spree super !

                  • Armor and health are all equal so that takes away the benefit from a Titan in normal crucible Hunters still have their agility and Warlocks still have their quick shield recharge...

                  • In PvP stats are normalized...a level 1 has the same armor as a level 30, you probably just suck.

I play a hunter and yes I die a lot but I take troves of the opposition with me. Here is why it's not OP or underbalaced and why it's balanced in my experience. The hunter is a support role character. They are used for damaging the enemy from afar. That is why their primary weapon is a scout rifle. Second, if you are playing tank with it then you are not performing your role correctly. You should never engaged head up to a group unless you have your super active. The goal of PvP is to win. Not get kills, although kills accumulate points. Winning gets you the marks for armor and the sort. Kills don't amount to much but statistical data of apparent performance. If you are a team player and damage the enemy so kills can be made for points by the whole team then you have a better chance to win. It's the dog eat dog lone wolf mentality that gets you hammered as a hunter trying to take on more then you can chew. Be sneaky, pick your targets, slow down and think so you have a strategy for attack and run. If you use your agility as it was intended then you can be super effective at keeping the enemy at bay by moving quickly across the boards, spotting so your team can engage them using the mini radar and doing DPS at the correct moment. It's the paper of the classic paper, rocks, scissor game. Not tough but can still cut them and their damage potential through keeping them at distance and running for cover.

                      • People are only mad at hunters when they get killed by their super. Not once have I heard anyone complain about getting killed all the time by a throwing knife or bling strike. I mean the warlock can melee to regain his health or even get an overshield. The titan can punch and hit multiple people at once or just keep running circles and shoulder charging anyone he sees. It's like the charger from L4D2, exept they're not limited to a straight line.

                          • Everyone thinks that there chosen class is the weakest. The fact is that the hunter's supers are OP in pvp. I can't wait to see all the hunters here crying after Bungie nerfs them.

                            • this was silly to me seeing armor make absolutely no difference that I can see in the crucible. and the agility difference a hunter get is the most valuable thing you can have in PVP. at least the hunter class agility is far better than the titan not receiving an amount of defense that can be noticeable in a gun fight. maybe you should try playing the other classes out.
