Perhaps the 9 are the events as they happened instead.
9 people want to be immortal. Aliens teach them how to build forever thinking machines. Machines survive the total collapse. Somehow spread into the sea, then things get really strange but it would fit the time line of the awoken who evolved on the outer edge of the collapse perhaps the 9 intervened to save them?
