I remember Phantasy Star Universe having them and was part of some pretty important game mechanics, if I remember correctly.

Hey what console do you play on?

Can't say I've ever heard of that game. How so was it important to the overall game mechanics?

I think the player accepted missions from their home, changed gear/clothing there, could interact with other players' homes, had a bot thing that could be fed items and cause it to eventually 'grow' into an AI partner that could accompany the player on missions (and I think it was also used for item storage), and probably other stuff.

Heck, even Warframe has clan halls which are EXTREMELY important as they are massive, multi-floored, space stations that have a completely customizable room/hallway layout, require time and items donated by clan members to build new stuff, are NEEDED to research and develop the newest weapons and warframes, and (incoming run-on sentence) can now build space bridges to special sectors that can gain benefits/profits from players who use them to access those missions (and can even set a tax) while other clans can build an opposing bridge, initiating a war between the two and random players going to that sector can decide which of the two warring clans to fight for and go on a special mission to sabotage the other's bridge while fighting phantoms of that guild's members and standard phantom enemies.
