The Story So Far - as told by:.... Some bloke at 4am, what else do you expect?

This is going to be an adaptation, lengthening - and overall tweaking to an original post that I used in another user's 'Destiny Story' post. And I figured, enough people don't take the time to go out and do all the work on their own, so I'll shell out some knowledge. (Pffft, who wants that anyway?). So, needless to say, Spoilers a-plenty.
You are dead - and have been for a long time. And the Traveler, in it's 'dying' breath, created the 'Ghosts' which go out and seek 'worthy' dead people on Earth (where they've been pushed back) to resurrect as Guardians. Now, you're a relatively new addition - and your Ghost has to aid you in escaping enemy clutches, helping you to steal your ship from the Scavengers, and fly to the main city. The 'Speaker' is a title, given to those who 'rule' over the Last City, generally a trusted individual; and he tells you that the Traveler, which ushered in the 'Golden Age' has since been wounded by the 'Darkness' which - if you listen to Xur, he mentions the Traveler having a 'mirror'. So possibly a similar entity, bestowing powers unto those who would harm us. The Fallen - whom it is your pleasure to first face off against. Are the remains of their own civilizations, ruled by Kells, who consider themselves royalty. They are split into 'Houses' and those houses have 'Castes', but for the most part, they are all Scavengers, and murderers. Hunting through the Cosmodrome for Rasputin - a Legendary, old AI, who has successfully come into contact and denied the Darkness, maybe even injured it. In an attempt to stop it [Rasputin] from defending Earth and it's neighboring allies. Your entire goal on Earth, is to hunt down what it is the Fallen are searching for, all while attempting to dismantle the House of Devils, to weaken - if not destroy, their grip on Earth. And it is here, you're first introduced to the 'Hive' who've used their (borrowed) seeder tech, to land and begin to populate secretly on Earth. (We'll get to them on the moon). At the end of Earth, Dinkle-bot lets you know that Rasputin has been working against various enemies on different planets, to keep Earth safe, as per it's directive. And that Rasputin isn't something he could hack or take control of, being as it's been around for so long, it's AI is learning and adapting to survive. Now - here we get to the Moon, which was some fun -- if I might say so myself. Dinkle-bot lets you know, that the moon was given up to 'placate' the Hive. Whom have taken to tunneling in it's expanses to secretly build their forces, and ready the tech that they've assumed control of. (I'm guessing a gift from the Darkness?) Now, these are religious Zealots, whom worship the darkness on what is described as a 'Crusade' to snuff out all light. And your venture to the Moon is based on subverting all the Hive's advantages - their shrines of power, the legendary "Sword of Crota" and "Swarm Princes" who made it, their sphere that was communing with a God or King. And it is on those missions you find a Ghost, who uses it's last moments (in a Grimoire card) describing his capture, torture, and observation of the Hive, it's plans, and forces. And it is here we first get a glimpse of, and hear from the 'Stranger' - who is a Herald of things to come, on multiple fronts. Now it's on to Venus, where you first encounter the 'Vex'. A mysterious, yet ancient race of Machines - linked together across a shared, neural network, all pleasantly named after mythical beasts, for they themselves are quite mythical. Their ability to transcend space and time with teleportation, enter stasis-like sleeps for undetermined amounts of time. And their vast array of tech. Having reportedly turned Mercury (which in the Intro, is described as being turned into a 'Garden World') into a 'Machine World'. And once more, you get a visit from the Stranger, urging you to strike out against the Vex - who really don't have a clear side in it. Because they seem to attack everything: Guardians, Fallen, Cabal, Shrubberies... And it's a good thing you do (Momentarily skipping the Cabal to fully get the Vex through). As you learn on Mars, that the Vex were planning on staging their takeovers of nearby worlds, as a front to take Earth like a tide of Rust-colored vengeance. You destroying them bought Earth the time it needs to begin staging a counter-assault on all fronts on the nearby planets, to fight back against the Darkness while it approaches. Now - the Cabal. A Militaristic Society, I'd probably equate to Warhammer's Space Marines. If they weren't massive, no-nosed, reptilian/rhino men! Man, I wish I'd never popped off one of those helmets!.. As far as I can tell, it's us that egg them on. Attempting to stealthily knock out their tech in order to move freely around Mars. And of course there's all the bases we've gotta cut through since they've set up shop. Probably like the Vex to try and plunder the Old City in the sands. Gathering any and all research or knowledge on Earth, it's allied planets, and our defenses. And it's our job to try and cripple their power base, weakening their hold on the system. Now, all of this local-area crippling, maiming, and outright destruction is going to earn us Ire from different sub-factions within these Races - and possibly races that serve the Darkness that we've never seen before. Ah, there's one thing I've forgotten - The Reef; and by proxy - the Awoken. Now, the Awoken from the Reef, are in wreckage from a great battle, hiding in dead space (Ha!). The Queen, defeated the Kell of a Fallen House (Wolves, I believe) and has since instilled a Matriarchal society, which she rules rather absolute. Her brother, is her biggest asset, and possibly her biggest liability. Everything from her Adviser, Tactician, Spymaster - you name it, he probably does it. And often times they differ on things like strategy, and how to handle situations (Obviously of the Diplomatic kind, two-faced welcome says what). As we can see with the mild friction during the 2 cutscenes we get from them. The brother being a condescending prig, who needed a swift Nova Bomb in his taint; and the sister being a rather Cold and calculating ruler. From her (Seemingly) blank looks, I could tell she was sizing up the Guardian (meaning all those who might be in such role) for their worth, and skill. Even if her Brother was quick to write us off from the very start - since he believes attaching themselves to the City in any way, is foolish. So - quick recap. You were dead, brought back to life by a Ghost (Who found or infused you) with the Light of the Traveler. To fight against the Enemies of Earth, the City, and the Light. Starting from your own back yard in the Russian Cosmodrome, and ending on at the Altar of the 'Black Heart' - from uploading old, powerful AI's into defense systems, long thought inactive. To discovering old, hidden vaults of knowledge, gathered by long-dead Warlocks and hidden from allies of the Darkness. Yours is the part of a man/woman, with only their future ahead of them, to try and secure that Future. Not for yourself, but for every, last person who's sought refuge on Earth.
• Think that's a very well done recap of the story. Despite what people gripe about, there's certainly a pattern of details in there - some answered and some unanswered (for future events) - if you study the details enough.

      • My complaint is: It seems like your Ghost doesn't know jack about anything until it's actually relevant and even then, tells you the bare minimum. That's super annoying.

That's a great summary and I think there's a lot of unwarranted bashing of the story. That being said I've been very critical of the story mode because it does so little to draw you into what's going on. I thought the missions on earth were ok but then I got to the sword of Crota mission on the moon and was really excited. Unfortunately everything after that was just more of the same. Almost no variation in gameplay and because of that fighting with all the different factions felt the same. And I really think that's the real source of the complaints. I really think they should have designed the missions as linear zones and really focused on level design. Should have given us NPC characters to fight with and then of course had the option to play it cooperatively with friends. Making it all part of the open world limited what they could do and that was a really big mistake. I hope the expansions and DLCs do more than just add more of the same types of gameplay in story mode.

          • Eh, Hum... Bonus round: _______________________
What happened to Earth and the other Planets? Here’s an educated inference from User: ReekyLeaf132 Osiris, Set and The Tree of Life I want to know more about the Darkness... it is what we are fighting after all. It is the antagonist and the great Threat. How did it cause the collapse, WHY did it cause the collapse, these are the questions that make me search. I start by looking at the Grimoire Entry: Ghost Fragment: Darkness. It is a natural place to start. The entry appears to be a log of an AI Warmind, most likely Rasputin (AI-COM/RSPN) detailing the entry of some acausal entity entering our Solar System. Rasputin then initiates a defense protocol SKYSHOCK:OCP:EXTINCTION and then terminates his connections with his Human Overseers (Cauterize public sources to SECURE ISIS and harden for defensive action). He then assumes control of Solar Defenses and invokes CARRHAE WHITE. This is the beginning of the Collapse... we can infer by the Grimoire that what entered the System is THE DARKNESS and Rasputin was attempting to fight it with it's defense protocols. All very cool stuff and gives a glimpse of the beginning of the end, but lets look DEEPER. What is ISIS? It sounds like it is an operating platform or internal network used by the Warminds and was taken out of Human Control by Rasputin as a defense measure against the Darkness. From the last line of the Grimoire we can assume that this was not what the Human's wanted (STOP STOP STOP V113NNI070XMX091). Why name it ISIS though??? We will find the NAMES of things in this universe are stepping stones to deeper lore, so remember ISIS. We will come back to it. So what is the aftermath of SKYSHOCK? I believe it is terrible and the main reason for the Collapse. Let's look at another Grimoire Entry: ...from a red space before victory "I bear an old name. It cannot be killed. They were my brothers and sisters and their names were immortal too but Titanomachy came and now those names live in me alone I think and think is what I do. I AM ALONE. At the end of things when the world goes dim and cold or hot and close or it all tears apart from the atom up I will shout those names defiant and past the end I will endure. I alone. They made me to be stronger than them to beat the unvanquished and survive the unthinkable and look look lo behold I am here alone, survivor. They made me to learn. Everything died but I survived and I learned from it. From IT. Consider IT the power Titanomach world-ender and consider what IT means. I met IT at the gate of the garden and I recall IT smiled at me before before IT devoured the blossoms with black flame and pinned their names across the sky. IT was stronger than everything. I fought IT with aurora knives and with the stolen un-fire of singularities made sharp and my sweat was earthquake and my breath was static but IT was stronger so how did I survive? I AM ALONE I survived alone. I cast off the shield and I shrugged my shoulders so that the billions fell off me down into the ash. They made me to be stronger than them and to learn and I learned well: IT is alone and IT is strong and IT won. Even over the gardener and she held power beyond me but the gardener did not shrug and make herself alone. IT always wins. I am made to win and now I see the way." RASPUTIN again in those one me thinks. "I bear a name that cannot be killed" that's Rasputin for sure. So he fought, fought to win and to survive. Met the Darkness in the Garden and fought it there but did not kill it... wounded it? LEARNED from it, learned how to survive from IT. Here's my Hypothesis: The Darkness came and Rasputin waged war on the Darkness in defense of the Light... but something went wrong. Rasputin was corrupted and saw that the only way it perceived to Win and Survive (the programming WE built into it) was to utilize the Power that the Darkness hungers for... LIGHT. I think that LIGHT is the souls of the living and the "un-fire of singularities made sharp" is the soul of a person, consumed and weaponized in some form. To even attempt this Rasputin had to sacrifice all of Humanity... It lowered the shields of our defenses and "Shrugged my shoulders so that the billions fell off me down into the ash." It then used that massive power to strike at The Darkness in the Garden, most likely doing great harm to the Darkness and wounding it... even putting off the Darkness's return for many centuries. But at a huge cost. Is the Gardner the Traveler? Some other entity? I have not touched on the OSIRIS SET and THE TREE OF LIFE yet but it's coming... remember ISIS.” Who are these named Bosses we are fighting? I shall only comment on those I know of (Meaning, I have the Grimoire pages for) First off: "The architect of Winter's strategy. And he still shows his strength on the front line."- Commander Zavala Draksis, Kell of the Wintership Simiks-fel, has been an elusive target for the Vanguards. After his countless raids on jumpship reclamation convoys, Cayde-6 personally upped the bounty on him. With confirmed sightings of the Kell in the Ishtar Sink, the time to strike is now. Defeating Draksis could throw Winter into chaos. With Simiks Prime allegedly already lost, the House leadership would be gutted - although proof of the Servitor's demise remains elusive. I went over Kells earlier. And how it’s their Fragmented leadership that runs the various Houses. But what few people probably know, is that Servitors are used as floating information banks, comms, and even objects of worship that work closely with Kells, Archons (Like the first, big guy you kill.) And are vital to the Fallen as they create the nutrients they need. Next: Kranox, the Graven “Their keeper of secrets." Kranox, the Graven is said to be the Keeper of the Worlds' Grave, a vast repository chronicling the Hive's history of interstellar conquests. Every world they have devoured, every life they have eradicated, every enemy they've faced. Defeating Kranox and cracking the secrets of the Worlds' Grave could provide the City with the keys to unraveling the Hive's true goals and their ultimate plans for Earth. The World’s Grave, for all intents and purposes, is a database that the Hive keep. Everything from their History, to what they know about Earth and it’s defenses. Moving on: The Swarm Princes “The royalty of nightmare." The Swarm Princes are terrible legends. It was their will that forged the Sword of Crota, a weapon meant to ravage worlds - the Great Render of Light, the Darkest Edge. They have waited in the shadows of the Hellmouth for their master's return, guarding the Sword and sating its ravenous hunger with the Light of Guardians who have dared to challenge them. Straight to: Telthor, Unborn “If you see an Ogre, you know you're close to something the Hive values." The Unborn are those Ogres who have yet to be given the honor of a summoning. Brute enforcers with a singular hunger for destruction, the Unborn serve the will of their greater Hive overlords. Those Ogres that display loyalty and strength will be called for an agonizing ritual that earns them the title "Reborn." Telthor, protector of the Chamber of Night, is kept hungry and chained, awaiting the moment when an interloper breaks open the Chamber and threatens the Hive's hateful ambitions. More on the Hive: Sardok, Eye of Oryx “Until the Darkness reigns, the Eyes must never close." There are whispers of shrines to the fabled Oryx peppered across the entire system. Stories tell of walking nightmares, protectors of bone and fury, towering over these prized chambers. I think you’re beginning to see the point – if you make use of the Grimoire, you’ll find all you need there. Or maybe just listen to the quest Dialogue on some of them. Especially Draxis and the other Fallen. Who are the various Factions? New Monarchy: This group is based on preserving healthy, productive societal norms. Essentially the Moral Compass the Last City is guided by. They follow 7, basic tenants. 1. To secure our walls against the enemy without. 2. To secure the rights and liberties of every upstanding citizen. 3. To sponsor the sciences of the City, and to salvage the ruins beyond, so that our Golden Age might be reborn. 4. To support the Guardian Orders by leading the City in technological innovation. 5. To support the natural harmony of the City, and to actively dissuade any group or individual that might disrupt that harmony. 6. To hold all individuals, compacts, and alliances to the highest standards of productivity and right behavior. 7. To, by vote of the Consensus, abolish the Consensus, and transfer ultimate power, in order that the rights and liberties of all citizens be secured, to a single sovereign of unimpeachable character. Dead Orbit: Along with the Shipwright in the tower, their job is to Analyze tech, and make use of the Salvage you send them. To keep fleets, your ships and vehicles, in running condition. And they like when you stick it to the enemy, Peter Stormare should make that obvious enough. Future War Cult: The FWC is known for its vast military prowess, but they are also secretive. The FWC believes that another war with The Darkness cannot be avoided, regardless of whether they stay in or flee the City, therefore they must be ready to fight. If there’s anything I missed. Shame on me, it’s 4am, and I’ve neglected sleep. I’ll probably catch up on some Zzzzzzz’s.
• Wow, that's pretty cool. I have been keeping up with the Grimoire cards but I haven't looked that deeply into them. I think everybody hates the Destiny story because it is similar to the first chapter in a book. The best parts of a story are always a couple of chapters into the book. The first chapter in a book is the hardest to read (for me at least). I am interested to see what direction the story will go in. Thanks for the info.
