I wish people would stop complaining about "the story," as that doesn't give Bungie anything useful to work with. Is it the story itself or the way it was told? Because that's an incredibly important distinction that I rarely see people talking about. IMO the story and lore are excellent, it's the execution and the way you feel involved (or in this case, not involved) that's the problem.

Yeah I've been thinking along the same lines. After reading a few posts I get it that The patrols are all info gathering for the tower and the three factions. I understand why the ghost has limited information and even lack of access to information-- (we are coming back on line and regathering intel.) A friend hasn't paid and picked up his preorder because he heard from someone that the game had a wanky story. That sucks. I can 't explain the plot of a game he hasn't played without ruining the game. He's played the beta and alpha and loved the gunplay but I can't explain the vex, time traveling, the cabal, dr. Shin and the black heart. As someone posted, if you see the story as a prologue, it makes sense. The engagement could be handled a little better. Simple touches like separate introductions for each class are not hard to do. Each class NPC's could have a dialogue tree or spoken lines, and perhaps a few specific fetch quests. It could be that this is part of a future release. How hard would it be to patch in a specific lore npc with a few quests? Or add a grimoire tab to options? I don't think the shortcomings are so aggregious as to avoid the game as my friend is doing.

  • I would put it as both. The "story" is pretty much non-existent, and it's told by a very uninterested narrator. There are 5 (?) characters in the story, and none of them have an actual name, and each of them are there for maybe 2 scenes (other than the Ghost). You are told at the beginning that the enemy is "the Darkness", but at the end you are fighting the god of the Vex (if I'm not mistaken). Somehow the Vex, Hive, Cabal and Fallen are all enemies of us and each other - but who is on the side of "the Darkness"? There is no real story here. Just a bunch of generic sci-fi tropes cobbled together by an unhumorous version of Wheatley.

  • Yeah, i remember when i gave them all that useful stuff to work with creating the story of master cheif. Remember guys, when bungie asked us all to write a story for three games? God bless the community for being around for halo reach, we really helped them nail that story. An halo 4, pretty sure that one was actually entirely community written.

  • Consumer feedback is ALWAYS important to good companies. They need to know that their player base is disappointed to enraged that they called this prologue a "story" because its not. Good game, great game play but NOTHING of value in the story department beyond a really rough draft outline.

  • Specifically it's the lack of a coherent story that I found frustrating. Who's Rasputin and why do I care? Whats the deal with the darkness? Who/what is the traveler and where is he from. I believe they laid a good foundation but failed to fill in Any of the blanks. It was also confusing. I still don't understand what's happened in the universe and why I was going to all the different planets.

But don't these drive you to find out what they mean? so in a way Bungie did achieve its goal of attracting you into the story. They will start to release more of the story and they will answer these questions. you don't quit the first chapter of a book because you don't see the plot. you continue reading and then at the END you understand

  • This is exactly how I see Bungie's approach to the story. We already know, if you have bothered to actually read through your Grimoire and paid attention to things said by the ghost and others, that; mankind not only colonized our solar system, but other galaxies as well, there appear to be ruins billions of years old seeded on every planet that coincidentally are full of Vex, several planets and moons in our system are already noted as being of particular interest to the grand scheme of things, a queen will be calling on us for help, and a "god" of sorts has and is still at war with the Traveler. No story here? I think more likely too many people that would rather watch TV, YouTube, Twitch, or a podcast than actually read and let their imaginations explore the possibilities of this new and massive story line. Just my opinion.

  • The lore and the potential is great. The story telling is NOT well done therefore the current story is a horrible misfire.

  • Yes but there is no lore or story in the game. It's a train wreck. How can you enter the final boss not even knowing why you need to be there?

  • That's what I mean by the execution of the story being poorly implemented. That plus the extremely mundane objectives that makeup the campaign. We're just errand runners for the ghost lol.

  • There is a difference between lore and story, and Destiny fails on both accounts. What is your purpose in the game? Drive back the darkness. Vague, which itself isn't a problem, but that is all it ever is, vague. You don't learn anything in the story besides your next objective, leaving your questions unanswered. What are the Hive and Fallen? What is an awoken? How am I a robot? Who is this person and why should I care about them? Actually no, you don't want to know about the characters because they're painfully bland. The only character I remember is Nathan Fillion's... because he's voiced by Nathan Fillion and even then, I know nothing about him. The cutscenes are there only to convey your next mission, leaving any character building to sidequests, which turn out to be nothing more than the typical MMO but downgraded even further. You don't learn anything about the world, anywhere, except for the grimoire cards which are subpar in and of themselves. These are just a few of the problems with the story and lore and they contribute nothing to the game.

  • Only two characters I remember are the rip off con artist crypt arch guy and the bounty robot.

And how many characters can you remember in any other single game IP. Diablo: Decker Cain, Griswold, Wirt, Gillian I think, Fernan the drunk. Characters that barely matter to the story yet they're memorable, except gillian. Edit: Chose Diablo because I haven't played the others.

If "the story" was bad people would be saying the traveler is dumb, guardians and the races are lame, aliens are lame etc... But no instead it's about how none of these things are expanded on and that's a separate discussion in my mind. See what I mean?

  • No, story is BOTH idea and conveyance. Great ideas and great potential, terrible delivery and therefore no conveyance - emotional investment? Nope. Intrigue? Nope. Cliff hanger ending? Nope. Conveying your place, purpose and the Who, What, Why, When and How (the BASIS OF ALL STORIES) of Destiny? Nope. Memorable characters? Not really aside the very brief encounter with The Queen (who?) and Her Brother (really? that is the best you can do?). Just because they name an AI Rasputin does NOT make it engaging. Sorry but the story as it is in Destiny's current state is HORRIBLE.

  • Those are all good criticisms but I rarely see people going into specifics like that. In that case it's OK to say the story sucks because you expanded on why.

Glad its OK with you that I have an opinion :D - and yes I form my opinions by putting in a lot of thought and I don't ever take criticizing something I love lightly (I love games of all kinds and I do love this game - or more the idea of it as far as story goes) and always call a spade a spade.

  • What is the story then? Drive back the darkness? That's some top-notch story you have there, except... wait a second... You don't drive back the darkness. You destroy the heart of the black garden. I thought we were just defending the city, which turned into defeating the hive, which turned into finding the vex, which turned into... Do you see now? You never actually accomplish anything? The darkness is still out there, and if you had succeded, the traveler would have been able to fix everything again. It didn't, because nothing was solved. What the PC did was merely a band-aid, a prologue for the story. It lacks plot and direction, narrative as well.

All true but it need not be that complete. But it DOES need to be complete in some fashion and have a driving reason to know more either backward, forward, sideways or all of the directions. Right now I am just content to grind and kill in PvP, patrol, level an alt, etc. but have, frankly, no connection to the story at this point. PS - I would love to see someone compile all the little cut scenes, Dinkle Bot monologues, Speaker monologues, etc and compile them into a "game movie". Doing that would show just how coherent or incoherent the story is.
