The only reliable way to get Exotics is from Xur. They drop in the Crucible I've heard, but it seems you must be a baddie to get 'em.

Baddie as in good or bad? Because I have some pretty decent Control games where I carry the team and they give me nothing. Then there are the games I can't carry my team and get bodied with them and I get nothing still. I never had good luck my whole life though so it kinda makes sense.

Pretty well known that you have to go negative in pvp to get decent items

Does it matter which game mode?

I've heard that the three-man Crucible matches give a better chance at obtaining loot, in some cases Legendaries and Exotics.
