Don't people play for fun anymore?

I remembered why I started playing video games, it was a way to escape into a fantasy world for hours on end that provided entertainment and just fun. These days, it seems like everyone has forgotten what the simple purpose of video games are; Destiny being no exception. It seems whether it's PVP or even PVE; players have gotten so serious about playing. Now don't get me wrong, when engaging an enemy, of course everyone wants to win, but even if you lose, it should have been fun just to try, especially when facing off an enemy with allies at your side. Sigh...maybe I am just sentimental and I probably will get heat for this post, but....I really want to know....do any of you players...just play to have fun...win or lose...just the adventure itself makes you happy? Hi everyone, first off I would just like to thank all of you for commenting on the post. Even if you have different opinions, it's absolutely fine because you are more than entitled to it. I was just happy to read that so many of you still believe in the basic fundamentals of fun, and even though some of you have carved out your own definitions of the word and what it means to you, I sincerely hope that you truly enjoy your gaming experiences, whether its with Destiny or any other game you might play. Thank you for reading, and SHINE ON ;)

  • I used to play for fun, then became very competitive(mostly due to being competitive with a friend and it kinda carried on in gaming), and since a year or so finally am back to playing for fun, being competitive isn't all that bad, but it also means buying a new game every few weeks cuz ppl switch to a new game so fast and i got tired of it(plus my wallet is slimming the last few years). Though i never took part in smack talking others or scolding them(at least not with a mic on so i was the only one who could hear it :P), cuz to others that stuff might be taken personally(which i totally understand cuz i feel the same way when ppl smack talk me). Plus u just get annoyed most part of the day cuz there's only xxx amount of free time i have and i wanna get this and that out of the way so it needs to happen fast or else i'm cranky!...and that guy i got with me is just staring at the walls and i need to make this fast!... NEVER AGAIN! Now i just take it easy and enjoy the game again

  • I wonder if a lot of the bad comments are coming from players that only play certain types of games and not others. They can't make this game match what they imagined because they have no imagination. You want a reputation that's good? Then help other Guardians. Its a very satisfying way to make friends.

Been telling people that on other games for years....

I haven't touched the PvP once since release. Not sure if or when I will. I personally have been having fun helping friends and even randoms progress through the story or grind out missions. It's all a matter of perspective.

    • That's more or less what I found my clan for. I share a few other peoples ideals on this post in question, some ive seen play on competitive because its more fun to win than lose, or at least to give people a good run for their money. Others are just as happy to stay on the PvE side of things and try and grind things out in that fashion, more or less what I do. Me and the guys I roll with usually just play to have fun, even if were derping off trying to kill eachother on our sparrows, all while speeding to the next objective to complete another mission or maybe even just explore. That's what we usually end up doing Once bounties are done and over with, cause then its serious, we have to communicate to make sure people get done in a timely manner. But after that we go goof off and brag to eachother about the different things we find xD If you like, feel free to message me or even join the fireteam. This applies to everyone, though I do hope you would not bother with spam. "The Guardians of Exudia" for anyone interested in it. On that note, now that im finished with my impromptu clan invitation, I do hope you enjoy the game still Sacred and do take care, see you on the next battlefield!

    • Yeah, I play video games to escape from life and to have fun. I really don't care too much if I win or lose. As long as I enjoy what I'm playing.

    • I still play for the fun of it, which is why I avoid crucible as much as possible, for some reason there's just no enjoyment in dying every 20 seconds!

      • It depends if you are competitive or passive. The people who have fun by winning are competitive by heart. I have fun when playing a game that has depth like the Elder Scrolls or RPGs. I love destiny for of the little things. For example, the patrol missions, the voices for the beacons are always different. I mean sure there is a loop at some point, but you can barely tell from the amount of work involved.

The way people game has changed a lot due to online MP. For me, it has skewed my experience with single player games. Skyrim was the last single player game that I played where I was okay with immersing myself into a virtual world. However, at times it felt lonely not being able to talk to someone or to collaborate together to achieve victory. I felt isolated from the online social experience of seeing friends and family playing a different game than me. MMOs and co-ops have been trying to bridge the gap of narrative with multiplayer for awhile but nothing has truly achieved it imo. Because of this, I dont think the majority of the gaming society will truly feel how you described which is basically how we gamed before online mp. I understand that im generalizing an entire culture based off of my own experience but this is how the online generation is. People go out to nightclubs and parties or to the gym just to update their twitter/fb/instagram just to tell others that they did this or that they were there, not to actually enjoy the event that they attended. Vidyas in a sense, fall into the same gap imo. tl;dr Imo, social networking/online play has had a hand in ruining a good time.

        • Destiny is the first game in years me and friends will fail a mission, but have so much fun doing so we'll be laughing too much and fail again and cycle continues. Dancing on Phogoth's back made us laugh so hard we had to take a break before coming back for another attempt. The last 'shooter' I played where I still had fun, win or lose, was UT99. I've been waiting a while for a game like this.

          • No matter if it's pvp or pve, everyone seems to have that need to be better than others. Everyone rushing to do way too hard stuff so they could get rewards before others and then look down upon players 1-2 levels lower than him. Luckily I found chillax friends to play with and if we die it's mostly a burst of laughter after that and I love it. We are not in a hurry, we help each other to gear up and level and wait to get people like us to raid with. That's what these kinds of games should be like in my opinion. I fully agree with OP.

          • I am with you man! I am that guy you see running around the edges of the map just checkin it all out looking for hiden gems. Not looking on the forums trying to find the chest ASAP. not grinding through hours of Crucible to be #1. I dont care to be #1 or #10000, just wanna shoot a few ppl, enjoy the gameplay for a bit in the breaks from the real world! :)

            • I love gaming! If I'm not on my xbox it'll be a site, gameboy, 3ds, ps etc. FREAKING LOVE IT! Competitive or not what's the problem? Everyone has their own style. I play to win, kill as many as you can. Finishing and completing everything on a game is what I play for. I need to get every achievement and all the best gear but that doesn't mean I'm not having fun. I hate it when you get people in pvp wanting to just have fun and ruin the whole competitiveness of the game. Trolls should stay under bridges not screwing up my games.

              • It's a Bungie game. Most people here are role playing conversations about video games they wish they could have with real people.

                • Great post and to be honest the only game that I have recently have been able to play just for fun is EvE online. But i try and have fun with Destiny when i have some down time to play it, i just wish it had a bit more launch content or a different form of leveling up past 20 rather than being a grind fest for better armor :(
