I used a sniper rifle, and by fluke I think I blew one of the leg panels off in one shot. Did like 5k damage. So there are specific spots on the leg panels that can do that as well. I shot the back / underside of the panel at an odd angle and there it went, BOOM!
My fire team were like. "Dude, wat?"

When the leg blows off, it does extra damage to the walker. It's not your gun, it's the ensuing explosion that does the damage. Watch closely next time and you'll see.

It would be nice if the bosses where less bullet sponges and needed to have more precise crits. The whole legs is hard to miss. It would be cool if hitting the little orange light on the leg did the crit damage.

That's because you did the last shot on it and you do critical bonus damage.

the standard way to kill it is to focus 1 leg at a time for crits until it blows up

lol same happened to me! I couldn't figure out where I had shot it to cause so much damage, though... I did find that if you shoot the "knee" (its leg joint) that it causes about 3,000 plus damage...
