Destiny

Discuss all things Destiny.

Destiny should lock people out of playing the game if they are 12 years old or under on their account.

I agree.

I disagree.

I have no strong feelings one way or the other.

Young children are so impressionable nowadays and I fear that many of them will play this game. Let's consider the idea of personal roles in killing other sentient beings. To kids, virtual experiences feel very real, not only because the graphics today are so amazing, but because they are taking on a first-person role in the killing process. Rather than just passively watching a rated-R violent movie, when kids play a game, they are one of the main characters inside the adventure. The entire experience becomes a more meaningful -- and deadly - in their brains, which are forming new connections every day. The other issue is that children will play a game where they mostly resolve conflicts through violence. Violent video games show kids how to express themselves physically, in a violent way. It's already way easier for a child to push another child when they're angry than to express their emotions and resolve a conflict through words. When you hear the tragic, heart-wrenching stories such as what happened in Newtown, CT, you wonder how exposure to violent games de-sensitizes people to the act of killing other people. What if that could carry over to their own life or others? The very possibility of creating sociopathic tendencies is something that should be avoided, not created. It also exposes children to possible instances of explicit languages which might shatter and destroy their youthful innocence. It's all about that confusion between reality and fantasy that may be difficult for a young person like that to see and understand. Is that what we really want to expose children to? Is that the sort of thing we want to promote? I propose the following and simple solution: Destiny checks the birthday of the user's account If it is less than 13, then that account will not be able to play until that user's 13th birthday has been reached as the game is rated T for teen and no one younger, lest their young and impressionable minds be exposed to the horrors that might push them over the edge. I personally believe that this is the best means to protect a growing new generation from sinking into sin and violence. Let me also present a legitimate and completely trustworthy source free of any bias: Fox News I have created a poll to provide a means to look at the responses of the thread at a glance, making it easier for discussion to be facilitated. Thank you for reading.

  • I just wish the game had more blood, so the rating would go up

  • I disagree, my younger brother had been saving for Battlefield 4 to play online, but he cant enjoy it because he is not "old" enough and the game wont let him play. Destiny is an online game, so if a kid gets it with the consent of their parents, they wont even be able to play at all.

No, if some kids parents buy them the game or they saved up money for it then they have the right to play it. If your so insecure that you can't handle what a few children are saying then maybe online gaming is not for you. Also I was 12 when I first played Resident Evil for the PS. I have been playing horror game for some time now and it has not effected me at all. Blaming games is a scapegoat, nothing else.

  • What about families with hunting traditions? Many of them taught their children to hunt before 12 years old and I would argue that shooting a squirrel is even more of a "big deal" than shooting a sentient being in a video game. Of course, I submit that the difference is that these families often guide their children with a lot more supervision than kids have playing destiny.

  • The gaming systems provide lock out controls for parents so it is their responsibility to monitor their kids, not Bungie's. They should be deciding what they play and don't play. I chuckled when you mentioned the explicit language thing. I was explaining that to my kids when they were 5 years old. Picked up that type of language from everyday adult conversations and the older kids at school. You can't hide your kids from the world. As a parent you deal with it and guide your children. Funny Halo was rated mature and not teen and my wife and I had big concerns with that. But every kid in school and their friends were playing the game. Keeping my kids from that game would have been a lot lot worst for them in having everyday social interaction with other kids. So as responsible parents, we took the actions necessarily to make sure they knew it was nothing more than a game. We talked with other parents, view the game ahead of time, etc. And I had a lot of wonderful bonding moments with them playing Halo together and they enjoyed kicking my butt in multiplayer. And if you think I would put my kids real birthday information on a gaming database or any other social media website/app, your crazy. Too many people out there that like to prey on kids.

  • I do not believe this is a decision to be made by a community. It is to the discretion of the parents and the children who play this game. After playing Destiny in depth, I find it perfectly acceptable for young children, nor worse than a Star Wars game. And, if this is a loosely veiled attempt to assault our younger generation of gamers, then shame on you and anyone else. Everyone has a right to enjoy this vast wealth of entertainment. Children have every right to consume entertainment, and to talk about it with their parents. Furthermore, these decisions should not be made because you do not like playing with children, as that is absurd. And, frankly, on average, it is the grown men who are bigoted, vulgar, and hateful. That's a fact. On average, the banned users on consoles are 22-26 years of age. Not children by any means. I welcome all players, of any age. If you want to experience mythical fiction, then so be it. But talk to your parents, make informed decisions. That is the rate of maturity. Not age.

  • While I like the idea of no kids in my games, COD, Destiny, etc (not all kids are bad or etc, but many act very immature, those are the ones I want removed), the reason you want this in place is very out dated and behind the times. I suggest you change your post, before someone with a pysch background comes in and rips it apart. Just my thoughts.

    • You're implying that videogames are the sole reason why violence occurs, totally ignoring irresponsible parenting/guidance or mental illness. How about instead of scapegoating videogames or other media, we instead tackle the bigger social issue, the disconnected way parents raise their kids.

      • There is a rating system. There are already people who have control over what their kids play. It is not Destiny's, Activision, PS, or MS's responsibility to police actions any further.

      • Not to say I'm for or against this but I don't think it should be bungies responsibility to police tis. kid's usually have parents let them do the job they are supposed to do.

      • What we really need are isolation units for everyone under the age of twelve. That way they'll be protected from bacteria, violent images, and revealing clothing. Upon reaching the age of twelve, the children can transition to a pseudo-sensory chamber where they can see shapes (but not flesh tones) and hear muffled sounds that aren't too loud. Upon reaching the age of 19, the child will be allowed to explore the rest of the house, but shouldn't go outside. They will not yet be ready for the world at this stage, and loud noises may burst their ear drums, or the sight of an exposed thigh may induce a hysterical episode. They can begin watching morning news, but the TV should be switched off for breaking news stories. At the age of 21, the child can go as far as the end of the block, but should return home when the street lights come on. Reading will be limited (as always) to the Holy Scripture, and they can look upon members of the opposite gender as long as they'll fully clothed. Sure, you could call it a straw man tactic, but I prefer to think of it as a parable.

        • It is the parents job to decide if they will allow their children to play the games, not Bungies. If their parents allow them to play the game and it creates negative impacts on the child, well that sucks for them.

          • No. It's up to the parents. Companies and the government and everyone in general needs to mind their own damn business. The fact that no one seems to want to do that is mostly why the world is shit right now.

          • I disagree because I played Halo back when I was 4, along with CoD and other similar violent games. I can't say anything. Also, children don't grow violent because of violent video games. It's all about how they're treated at home, school, etcetera. Like I said, I've been playing violent games and watching violent movies since I was about 3-4, and I'm not violent at all. I'm a really conserved and quiet person. I'm only violent why someone makes me snap, and that only happens when I get into a physical fight, or I'm having a very heated argument to with someone. If it's an argument, all I do is say rash things that I normally wouldn't say. If it's physical, I lash out and go absolutely crazy. I have little to no self control for the first 10 seconds or so. Which, that's what happens to everybody when they "snap" so it's not like it's anything new.
