What IS a "real" gamer?

Just thought I'd pose the question out there to everyone, since there's always the argument regarding who's a "real" or "hardcore" or "casual" gamer based on the games they play, gender, etc. What to you is a real gamer? Is there a requirement or specific criteria or do you (like me, to answer my own question) simply regard a gamer as "someone who plays video games"? Annnnnd...GO!

  • I would agree with you if society went by simple definitions and did not attach greater meanings to words, but the latter is not the case, so I do not. When I think of the word "gamer", I think "hardcore gamer", and Urban Dictionary fairly captures the connotations of the word: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Hardcore%20Gamer I do not agree entirely with UD, but I do see "gamers" as churning through a LOT of video games, generally PvE games that are escapist and non-competitive in nature. They look down at PvP FPS games as being too casual, even if it takes hardcore effort and dedication to "git gud" in those types of games. Gamers develop a weird downside-up elitist attitude even as they are viewed as loser nerds by society in general. I would not want to be considered a gamer, and I think that is an attitude that is common among PvP FPS players, regardless of how dedicated we are to the few games we play. I think competitive FPS is a different animal altogether. I would be interested in what other PvP FPS players have to say about that. Note: Destiny is escapist, non-competitive PvE so it is definitely for "gamers". However, I expect those people will be disillusioned rather quickly when they learn how little content Bungle is willing to provide in the base game. Gamers are far more demanding of content than Bungle's old PvP FPS crowd.
