Wow, kinda surprising to see a gaming forum so out of touch in what defines a competitive multiplayer experience in today's context. Yes, if you follow the strict definition itself you're going to end up saying that the multiplayer is competitive. However this is not within context. While it's true to the definition, the actual competitive gaming crowd is going to largely disagree with you. Operating by that definition you could call Mario Party 8 a competitive game, and believe me when I say it's a rarity for anyone in the competitive scene to agree to something like that. Because the definition listed is as broad as it is, the competitive community has taken on its own version of that word. Agree with the result or not, they do not operate by the one listed. The things the OP listed all detract from a competitive experience because they all bar incentive to continue, and an incentive to win. One thing he listed bars part of the competition in its entirety. Competitive multiplayers of today's standard supply you with both without holding you back from obtaining those goals. Actually I take that back. They will hold you back in one way and only one way - by the opponent's abilities matched against your own. This is key to the competitive community's view on competition. What results from the match is what drives the player forward to become a better player and receive rewards for eventually being just that. That is in a summarized way, the definition the competitive community abides by. Basically, it's a slang version of the word "competitive." -Teh Puma
• I disagree with the part about "no incentive to continue and an incentive to win" First, they keep stats, and we all know competitive players like stats. Second, Bungie has put in the Iron Banner matches, and from what it sounds like, several other events that will come and go with rewards, and if you miss them, you are out of luck.

 • An incentive to win/continue implies that the better you are, the more you should be rewarded. Take Halo 4 for example, people ranked up to the highest they could get and then quit the game because there was nothing to keep them going. What's my incentive to keep playing Destiny? There is a chance that I may be picked to get the loot drop in PVP, regardless of if I'm playing and doing extremely well or dying a lot. People are going to level up fully and then probably take the game out of their tray.

 • Then what is your incentive to play any MP? All games end like that. You end up playing because it's fun. That's the point of games right?

 • I don't usually play Multiplayer game so I don't have an actual answer. Last game I played competitively/semi-professionally was Halo 3 and ODST firefight if you count that as a thing. I -blam!-ing loved Firefight.

 • Check out the info on the Trials of Osiris. The more you win, the better your rewards. Once you lose 3 times, you are out.
