This for sure is going to be against some copyrights and trademarks. Don't get me wrong, I'd love if this could be a real thing, but there is no way that this could become an actual recreation of Halo and not be told to shut it down or start some lawsuits. Especially if you EVER make even a single penny from it; a free download MIGHT be in some form creatable to a degree, but anything for any type of possible profit, even advertising on the download page, could get you guys into deep crap. Not trying to crush dreams or be disruptive, just trying to give a word of advice to walk cautiously with this before something fun turns you bankrupt.
Aside from the advice, and since your probably going to keep doing it anyway, I totally think this is a awesome idea and I would love to support it, but I just don't think its going to be aloud to happen.

As long as it is not exactly titled HALO then he is fine, you cannot trademark gameplay.
-
But they can copyright graphic designs, sounds, and much more than you'd think. Don't doubt the power of industry franchises.
-
Which is why this gameplay doesn't show any exact similarities with halo whatsoever.
-
Maybe not right now, but that's not what it sounds like they want the finished product to be though.

I'm sure if these guys are competent enough to get this far with the design they will also be smart enough to avoid legal repercussions.
