Anyone remember that quote? What ever happened to that? In the beta, countless times I drove my sparrow off a ledge to an area that looked explorable, only to find that going there just killed me. It felt like all of Old Russia was the size of Forge World from Halo. I hardly considerate it to be worthy of the "Open World" title. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED the beta. The only thing that disappointed me was the explore mode. I expected to be spending most of my time in the game on explore, just, you know, exploring, but the gamemodes' name isn't really true to itself when you know the whole map of Old Russia after about an hour of gameplay. The "open world" in Destiny is a bit disappointing. I doubt those small areas that are blocked off will make the area feel much bigger, either. Anyone feel the same?
Edit: I made this thread right after the beta, before the game came out. Everyone got mad at me and freaked out. They all claimed, "It was just a beta." No-one really gets game betas that are available two months prior to release. Those aren't betas, they're demos. No-one believed me. Then, the game came out. And everyone began praising this thread. Funny.
I believe that if Destiny wasn't overhyped/over-advertised, AngryJoe wouldn't be flipping out. It is a GREAT game, it just doesn't live up to its pre-game hype. $1,000,000 was too much of an advertising fund, Activision.

True, It's not really open world. Just "big halo level".
-
Old russia in the beta wasn't fully unlocked there were plenty of closed off areas. As well as the dark fog areas that blocked us off as well which will be open during release. Old russia is really really big did you try exploring it without riding your sparrow at all? I dare you try fellow guardian it's much fun!
-
Haha the first time I loaded up explore the Ghost was like "You can go anywhere" so I drove off the cliff into the lake and died. Weelllllpppp.
-
Wow, I forgot about that line. The size of Old Russia was rather disappointing. I expecting a map size at least twice as large as what we got in the Beta. I hope there are extra areas, but I don't feel confident that they will be all that big. It really felt like all the Beta Earth missions were all the "main story" missions there was going to be there. Any extra areas will probably be Destiny's equivalent to "side quests".
-
That's what I loved about the Fallout games and Skyrim. You could explore as far as your level, weapons and skill allowed you to. I wasn't a huge fan of how each space was a largely enclosed zone with a linear progression to the next zone. Locked doors also irritate me. We are guardians with a rocket launcher for crying out loud. We can manage to break down a door? Block it with rubble or a cave in or a massive steel beam or something. Don't just make it a piece of graphic on the wall. Don't get me wrong, I loved the game but would have loved a bit more of a less linear approach to some of the areas.

Destiny is a big scam
-
I believe it was also quoted in a video "...these are places we one day hope to allow you to explore"
-
im ok with this simply because people will try to glitch/exploit outside the map and such.
-
You knew all of Old Russia after an hour? Did you know about the Hive/Fallen war in Skywatch after an hour? Did you know about the pikes in Forgotten Shores? Had you stood in the shadow of Kingswatch? My point is that Old Russia is pretty big and it will be bigger than the Beta, at least a little. Then there are at least three more big maps. Let spend a hundred hours or so with the final game before we're disappointed, eh?

I remember that statement. I wonder if anything changed along the way and that was the original plan but had to be scaled back for some reason.
-
-
There were locked doors and more areas soon to be explored just in Old Russia that will be opened up. Remember that area where you started? That is most likely opened up too. What you played was just a grain of sugar compared to the mountains to come. When the full game comes, you can climb all the mountains you want. :D
-
Its not that large but if you take into account we get 4-5 of these areas then I think its ultimately worth it still its open world in the sense I can wherever I want as long as I'm not on mission which a lot of games don't have they hyped themselves up so much that they could never live up to the expectations it'll still be loads of fun and who knows maybe the other maps are actually massive

Edited by ProwlyB: 8/13/2014 4:08:50 AMI'm not going to lie to you, I wish exploration mode was as grandiose as Skyrim. But here's the thing: Skyrim IS exploration mode. And that's all it is - only 1 game mode, and no multiplayer PvP. There's nothing "shared world" about Skyrim. So, you can't realistically expect Destiny will be near as open world as Skyrim considering everything else you're getting with Destiny. As far as Bungie not delivering on game promises...they pretty much slap "Subject to change" on everything they put out to the public.
-
Ya I hear ya. I was disappointed about that myself, the game isn't as big as I thought it was either.
-
I agree, the whole "if you see it you can go there" thing is one of the reasons I was really excited for Destiny. I was kind of disappointed when I finally played it.
-
There was tons of spots that weren't accessible during beta
-
U couldn't go everywhere every time u tried to u we're killed by a bunch of level 20 guys don't worry there is more to explore
-
Yeah they lied, I've already brought this up many times. Watch out though fanboys who will defend any criticism of Destiny incoming.
-
Careful. I started a thread on this subject and got absolutely ravaged by the fanboy drones.
-
I thought the same thing.
-
We can dream it for the sequels, but it won't be happening anytime soon. We're better off enjoying what we get rather than reminiscing about what was promised.
-
agree but isn't that just the beta?? I'm just guessing

sad. i wish i would have had some of this info before i gave bungie my money. Lies to get people to order, or is it something we get weeks after release. we shall see very shortly. Id blame activison and bungie if it turns out to be lies.
