I don't know if this is the full story. I have worked in customer service for years and being on that end listening to the customer, some...not all, but some of the time these problems are caused on the user end. The letter mentioned " I explained that my son had probably downloaded the title while I was away on business". And there it is. The kid most likely reactivated the service, and downloaded a game. I am sure there is fine print in the terms of service saying that once you do this, no refund is allowed. Sony isn't in the business of stealing peoples money after you cancel the service. The fact that he said my son "probably" downloaded a game... probably? You are not sure at this point given all the hassle you have been through on this? No, he knows for certian this is what happened and is now crying injustice for it. System partental controls. Use them next time, lesson learned.

  • The kid should not have been able to download the PS+ game if Sony hd cancelled how subscription like they were supposed to, works the exact same on XBL, if you haven't got Gold then it will switch the ability to download to an ad promoting Gold.

  • >father leaves credit card attached to account >child goes to PS+ game of the month >"you need ps+ to download and play this title plus other benefits" >child subscribes to ps+ with saved credit card info The father should have put Store purchases behind a password and/or removed credit card info.

  • The kid should've known better than to pay for things without his parents permission, that is 100% the child's fault

  • The same thing happens with iOS and Android device in-app purchases, parents need to be more responsible. The whole thing could've been avoided just by either removing the CC info or password protecting it.

  • The whole thing could have been prevented by OP actually teaching his kids the value of money and that they should always ask permission, like any decent parent

  • In the end, it falls upon the parent and it is their fault for this entire mix-up.

  • Actually he shouldn't have been charged at all because his -blam!-ing sub ran out and was off auto-renewal. No one in the house should have been able to download a PS+ game, plain and simple not to mention he shouldn't have been charged a renewal fee in the first place.

First off, to the author. I think your situation sucks. I'm a long time Sony supporter too, but I've never had anything like this happen. Now onto the rest of my thoughts. How long was it after your sub was not to auto renew that your son allegedly downloaded a game? If it was within a couple of weeks then that might be the problem. A lot of companies will actually provide grace periods, to see how serious you are about cancelling/not renewing. This is a thing. I also have done customer service before and have seen this happen. I do not know if Sony is one of these companies, but here's what happens: You "cancel" but you still retain full service for a couple weeks or so (varies with some companies). During this period if you utilize any of the services that you were "cancelling" then if sets your service back into renew mode. I'm not saying this is a good thing, or that it is right or fair. However, I'm wondering if there is something in the fine print about this. If there is then this is likely your problem. Unfortunately, this also means that you would be required to pay as it would be considered part of the terms of service and thus part of your "contract." I hope you get this figured out and without any more horrible surprises. EDIT: Found a couple mistakes and corrected them. Also, I do recognize that the original post is from reddit, but still felt inclined to respond as I have.
