whats the difference between them besides lore? do they offer exclusive items or something? because that will sell me over background stories

Yes. Gaining favor with different factions gives you different weapons and gear. You can join up with all of them but it would take a while and would get pretty expensive.

Yes there is exclusive gear for the factions but I can't remember what the differences are. In case you're wondering. You gain favor with factions by wearing a class item of from that faction. Then you gain vanguard and crucible marks like usual but now they go to towards that faction instead.
