So, there are these topics going around about the size of Old Russia and they have interesting videos linked to them.
One of the videos is called: Destiny Behind Closed Doors Demo - E3 2013
In that video the guy showcasing the demo looks into the far distance of the map (where you started the story in the beta) and says and I quote "So all of this is playable space. That we hope one day get to send you to. It's all real geometry and you could go there, we could go there right now......" This is what he says in the video at the 2:20 mark.
Does this confirm that Old Russia is far bigger than we thought? This would also explain and justify the lack of other destinations on earth. Or is this just false advertisement/big screw up by the guy playing the demo?
Here are links to videos that tell the same thing...

I believe that was the intent. However putting it to practice probably didn't work out so well. For one, in the beta they closed the door and you cannot go back to that point in the game. I am highly doubtful that they only did that for the beta. Second, they really didn't have randomly spawned enemies. The same enemies (for the most part) always spawned in the same area and did the same actions (i.e moved from point a to point b). Having all that real geometry means they would have to have preprogrammed all those enemies for those areas. Way to much development time would be spent on making that. So I am sure it was sacrificed.
