The word you're looking for is memes. Ideas that spread quickly and are slightly modified but still carry the same theme.
One can't really have an opinion on memes as a whole but I can tell you that Internet humor based memes are mostly obnoxious.

Well I know they are memes, but when I think of a meme I generally think of the "All your base are belong to us", "Over 9000", "Leeroy Jenkins" and things like that. I feel photo fad is a more accurate description of the kind of meme I am referencing. I take it you never partook in planking then, huh.

Oh aight. I wasn't sure if maybe you hadn't heard of the word and/or had a foggy definition of it, since many people do. Specifically on 'I'm making this pose in an odd place' kind of photo fads, I like if they're creative and/or hard to pull off. I've seen a million pictures if people just on the ground and that gets boring but when some mofo is up on a billboard or some shit I'm impressed. I never took any but I have made the poses satirically.

The explosion of caption memes kinda put a bad taste in peoples mouth about memes, but the older ones were good in my opinion.

Yep. I hate seeing rage faces or advice dog style image macros referred to as 'memes.' They are simply a type of meme. It gives the word a negative connotation. There are tons of good memes out there.
