38 Million Gallons of Water Down The Drain
Because some hooligan decided it would be funny to pee in the water reservoir.

Just after 1 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2014, Portland Water Bureau security staff observed on camera three men at Mt. Tabor Reservoir Number 5 in Southeast Portland. A 19-year old man was filmed urinating through the iron fence into the reservoir. Minutes later, the two other men, ages 18 and 19, attempted to scale the fence, with one successfully entering the reservoir.
These actions forced the Water Bureau to immediately take the 50-million gallon Mt. Tabor Reservoir 5 off-line and test for possible contamination.
A Portland Police Bureau officer and Portland Water Bureau ranger quickly responded. The three men were cited for trespassing, and one man for public urination. At this time, all three men have been excluded from Mt. Tabor Park. Police will review the surveillance video to determine whether the men will be charged with a crime.
David Shaff, Portland Water Bureau Administrator, reported that about 38-million gallons of drinking water will be discarded and replaced with fresh water from the Bull Run water supply.
Water quality test samples from the reservoir were taken early this morning, with test results due back by Thursday, April 17.
Shaff acknowledged the public health risk is slight, but says that the bureau will not serve purposely tainted drinking water to the public.
‘Our customers have an expectation that their water is not deliberately contaminated. We have the ability to meet that expectation while minimizing public health concerns,” said Shaff. “We will continue to provide our customers with safe, clean and cold Bull Run water.’
Video surveillance and reports written by the Portland Police Bureau and the Portland Water Bureau will be submitted to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office for possible criminal charges.[/quote]

That's just beyond stupid. There could be dead animals, frogs, bugs, birds in that very water as well. A simple urine test from the guy would have been a much more wise move.

1 ReplyI remeber the last time that happened and my wife and I thought it was dumb to dump it. They're open reservoirs in the middle of Mt. Tabor park (a very popular park in Portland) and while the water is fresh from the mountains via the Bull Run it is still untreated water while in the reservoirs. Ducks swim, pee, and poop in it all of the time. Mosquitos and frogs can lay eggs and though it's got a fancy iron fence around it nature is pretty much free to do whatever it wants in the reservoirs. The water gets treated after that point and then sent to the homes and businesses. It's been made into a big deal because the guy got caught. Also made into a bigger deal than necessary becasue the city wants to replace the reservoirs but a majority of thr citizens (myself included) like them. They are a beatiful fixture in the park and have provided great water (post treatment) for decades but the city wants to spend unnecessary tax money on new reservoirs that the citizens don't really want. So anything that reflects poorly on the current reservoirs will be made into a bigger deal by the city. Bleh. Source: Up until 4 months ago I lived about 8 blocks from the park.

1 ReplySo one guy pissed into 50 million gallons of water, so 76% of it is now tainted? Math time. Typical urination yields 200 mL of urine. 95% of that is water, so only 10mL of waste is excreted. 50 million gallons = 189,270,589,200 milliliters. That means there are .00005 ppm (parts per million) of human waste in the reservoir. And all this is in addition to the fact that urine is sterile.

4 RepliesThat's a fair amount of water, but not a huge amount. The impact depends on where it happened, and the water will just return to the creeks.

3 RepliesLol. You know what our water filter is up here? Chlorine. Do you know how much shit is in our water for us to run our water through chlorine to "clean" it? And somebody dumps a pool of water holding over 38 million gallons over some piss. A pool that size would barely be affected. Every bit of water up here is treated like this. Hell, I've got two water jugs that I use for drinking water. I put 1/4 of a tsp of bleach in to clean things out.

Stupid. That urine was probably cleaner than the water. This isn't a big deal, though. This planet has an abundance of water.

Unfortunately, it probably would've been a liability issue for them. "What do you mean my water has piss in it!" and "I got cancer after drinking this so I'm suing!" and whatnot.
