Bungie's in-house engine(s) seems pretty impressive. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-08-23-bungie-destiny-can-surpass-halo-sit-alongside-star-wars

I think Grognok etc is impressive in most aspects, but the animations don't seem to have physics applied yet... For example, Battlefield BC2 had proper animations, but lacked the real-time physics provided by EA Sport's ANT in Battlefield 3. You can see it in how the soldiers tilt when they turn a corner at a sprint or when they drop to the ground like real bodies. Implementing Euphoria or Havok into Destiny's engine should be possible.

I wasn't talking about Grognok. That is only one of the tools used in Destiny. It's their level building (world building) tool. Honestly at this point, there's no sense it comparing and contrasting engines until we see the final product. The last time we saw an extended clip of Destiny's gameplay was what 5? 6? 7? builds ago? I'm reserving my judgement until at least the beta. If not the final product.

  • You're right, it's just one tool- just like how the animation is another (and possibly upgradeable). From the various trailers released, I haven't seen a particular difference in the animation though. I'm not surprised however, because most studios don't show in-game footage/demos before the basic animations are complete. So in this case, I think it's fair to expect these to be the same animations used in the release.

I think Bungie will do just fine in facial animation - hence the recent GDC presentation. But facial animation and mocap is not what this is about - I mean body movement effected by physics, like the image in the OP.

  • Yes. I understand what you are getting at. The point I'm making is that you may find yourself pleasantly surprised and you should reserve your judgement for now. I do not believe any of us have truly seen an up-to-date glimpse of Destiny.

  • I'd be freaking blown away if they had body physics added by release. The character designs are so gorgeous that I'm salivating to have them come alive with the best systems out there. Know what I mean?
