My thoughts on Titanfall

Ok, let's get this out of the way first: It's fun, Simple as that. However, I don't think it's worthy of the endless praise it's getting from everywhere, nor am I too thrilled about what it means for the future of the FPS genre. Let's start off with the good. It's smaller weapon sandbox compared to other modern FPS games makes it easier to balance out, parkour provides an interesting vertical element to the campaign (although I hardly ever use any of the functions aside from the double jump) and the bots provide a nice starting point to "get into it", along with a decent "power trip" for players of all skill levels Now, for the "meh" parts. First of all: Titan combat. It's just not as good as the pilot combat. And pretty much revolves around who's vortex shield runs out first (Unless you use the ES like me, which is insanely OP, as it kills rodeoing pilots, other titans and dropships with ease) and it's bloody easy to sit upon a building and -blam!- something up with the Archer/Amped Archer. The Smart Pistol, while not particularly OP in the slightest, is a bad idea because it pretty much removes any aiming skill required in this game at all. And a final minor annoyance is that Grunt/Grunt executions pause until a pilot nears, giving me a minor "Yeah! I saved that guy" at the expense of my Immersion. Now for the bad. The colour pallet (Anyone else getting sick of Browns and Greys as the main two colours in everything these days?). Backstory that is pretty generic (Evil corporation from Earth that only cares about profit is immorally taking our resources!), bots could do with some kind of buff and an Art direction I don't particularly care for. Now, for my main concern: The impact it has on the future of the genre. I consider myself a fan of the single player element in FPS games, and even in games where the mutiplayer is sub-par I still find myself engrossed in the story and having fun with the campaign gameplay. However, if this catches on, if more and more developers decide to go the route Titanfall is going down, I'm afraid that there won't be many shooters out there that I'll enjoy, and that's a damn shame.

  • I'd have to say my only complaint about Titan combat is that Titan combat is always on a level playing field

And pretty much revolves around who's vortex shield runs out first [/quote] That just isn't true. I've killed three Titans in one life before because I was using the strafe mechanic effectively around the map, even though my void shields kept going down. And electric smoke isn't a problem in Titan combat if you know how to move, since it is an area denial weapon; if someone is foolish enough to walk into it, or stay in it, that's their fault. I hardly ever saw anyone use it, and when I did the target Titans got away just fine. Agreed about bots though, they need buff. As for the impact on gaming, it is hardly as if this is the first multiplayer centric AAA title. Quake's been doing it for over a decade.
