Dropship dude's Review: Titanfall Beta

Well, I know I'm late to the party, but with all of this hate and love rolling around the Beta, I thought I'd let people know my opinion on the title. First of all, I have to say, it's fun. I've enjoyed every moment of the few hours I've managed to play, aside from one atrocious lag spike on my end caused by my crappy ISP. On a 145ms ping to the West Europe dataservers (more on that in a moment), the gameplay has actually been extremely smooth. BF4 and other FPS titles cannot claim the same victory. The netcoding of the game is clearly really well done. So with these few things in mind, let's move into the swing of things. Gameplay It's fast, frantic and fun. The three 'F's of a good, competitive shooter. Keep in mind I also love games like ArmA 2, which are anything but fast, but the point still stands. Dropping in from your ship is a pretty sweet way to start the game. A few last seconds of selecting your loadouts and picking your wildcards, then you're dropped into a fast-filling battlefield. Some Spectres (AI human-sized robots) lurk around the map already, each trying to kill the other Spectres they spawn in with. A quick pop to the head and they're down, but I've just given my position to all of the nearby Pilots (players) away for a small points boost. It's OK though, because I've got the ability to sprint much faster equipped, and with a tap of the left bumper, I'm out of there in a flash. A few minutes and some pretty sweet kills later, I get notified that my Titan is ready. I call it in with the Titan Warp ability equipped, so my Atlas Titan rockets to my position in less than three seconds. Before the enemy team know what's going on, I've cleaned up the landing zone with its heavy machine gun, and my team are in the lead. Next thing I know, two enemy Titans are bearing down on my position, and I'm leaping from side to side, ducking behind cover and using the layout of the map to protect me. But alas, two Titans was just a little too much this time around. My Titan is dropped into a 'doomed' state, ready to explode. The other Titans move in for the kill, but as I eject, I have a huge grin on my face. My Titan erupts in a blinding white light, killing both of the other Titans as it engulfs the narrow street in a fireball. That's the effect of my earlier-equipped Nuclear Detonation ability. Scenarios like this come game after game, changing every time you play. Granted, the opening few minutes generally play out the same as you race to your preferred defensive position and start taking pot shots, but after you've racked up some kills for a sped up Titanfall, you soon move from that high point and start taking the fight to them. It's this kind of change between a typical FPS and an all-out mech game which have kept me playing game after game after game, even if it's only on two maps. The gunplay is crisp, the movement is fast and easy to get the hang of, and the experience of leaping across the map to get the drop on other Pilots is a great laugh. Pure and simple, the game is fun. I will be playing more. Graphics While it's in Beta and textures are subject to change, the game is by no means gorgeous. It is, however, rather pretty, with interesting urban environments and some very detailed set pieces. It's no Battlefield 4, but it's no Call of Duty: Big Red One either. Perhaps a little lackluster for a PC and new-gen release. It should be interesting to see how it looks on the 360 compared to the One and the PC. Servers As I mentioned above, when starting Titanfall you have the option to choose which dataserver you'd like to be on. The list covers every region, and rather nicely tells you what your ping is to that server, to help you figure out your best bet and play where your connection won't be the deciding factor. Despite my 2MB/s upload and 0.7MB/s download, the game plays exceptionally smoothly. Well, if you've made it this far, well done. I suppose you'll be wanting to read my thoughts as one simple, nicely summed up number now? Hold tight. Remember, this is my feedback based on a Beta build of a game I've played a few hours of. Two maps limits the experience, as does the restricted amount of weapons and abilities (not to mention Titans), so with that in mind, consider the following score as more of a placeholder, due to be updated when the full game is out. Titanfall's Beta scores a very respectable 8/10. What are your thoughts? Played it? Want to know more? Post your comments and let's see if we can't keep things a little more civil than usual.
Interesting factors about my opinion: - I do not really enjoy Call of Duty games. - I often prefer slower-paced, extremely tactical shooters like ArmA. - Halo 4 was great, but my least favourite Halo title. - I have owned a PS3, 360, PS4 and X1, so there is little in the way of bias in that respect. That should answer a few questions you may have.
