If you really want to design games, then I can offer no higher recommendation than The Art of Game Design by Jesse Schell. Beyond that, a lot of it depends on how much programming experience your group has. At your level of education starting with a program like Game Maker might be prudent unless members of your group have had more experience with other languages, it's pretty easy to use and can help teach you many fundamentals of programming without being too code-heavy. Good luck! And remember, you, Evan, are a Game Designer.

  • I believe one of the devs from bungie mentioned this book in a mail sack a while ago.

  • Yes. that's where I initially heard of it. I knew quite a bit about Game Design principles before I started reading, but this book does a grand job of articulating hard-to-articulate ideas that I had and gave me some phrases I could use to describe things, among other skills.

I have actually a fair amount of experience world building with Game Maker, however I think we might try out Unity since it is more advanced but not as difficult to use as UDK. As for programming we have a few relatively proficient programmers and a few programmers in training. I trust they will be more than capable of getting the job done once they're ready. Also thanks for the book recommendation.
