I swear, some people rage over piracy for no good reason.

 • It actually helps more developers and producers than the media wants you to believe.

 • Lets review these "sources" shall we? Source #1: States that two brothers implemented a bug that crashed any pirated games. That did not help them out in anyway whatsoever. In fact it doesn't show how piracy helped them out at all, it just says this: "It's game was successful in spite of a majority of its copies being pirated." Source #2: LOL. I'm not even going to bother. Basically, the article is saying that even though piracy takes place, its possible for more people to talk about the product and spread it. Lol what bullshit. Source #3: Basically the same thing as Source #2. Source #4: This source even stated that it piracy, "supposedly", helps some filmmakers/developers. And would you look at this? "Big films benefited mostly in countries where Megaupload wa already really unpopular. and small or medium-sized films benefited not at all -- or actually saw their box office revenues fall even when controlled by a variety of other factors." Again, they haven't shown how piracy helped them and just claimed. They even stated themselves that even if a small amount were successful, most were harmed or stayed the same. Source #5: Basically Source #2, but using "studies" which still don't prove that piracy is a good thing and even say that the music industry isn't in decline from outside sources, not piracy. Some of those "sources" are bullshit which don't prove shit and one of them proves that piracy mostly hurts more than it helps. There is a reason why its illegal, maybe it doesn't hurt the industry but its still a form of stealing. Here's some sources of my own: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CAsQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fscreenrant.com%2Fmovie-piracy-zombieland-video-on-demand-digital-download-solutions-kofi-35289%2F&ei=oNPJUuawHuHw2QWNroHwBw&usg=AFQjCNGXA5yW3sWiT6dj5twP0ERNbASmAg http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=6&ved=0CCkQFjAF&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.steamgifts.com%2Fforum%2FR3jni%2Fhow-bad-is-piracy&ei=oNPJUuawHuHw2QWNroHwBw&usg=AFQjCNFLKeKoZYCPlVUsQnj4ik29PQnevA http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=7&ved=0CCsQFjAG&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.idownloadblog.com%2F2012%2F05%2F07%2Fpiracy-huge-problem-jailbreak%2F&ei=oNPJUuawHuHw2QWNroHwBw&usg=AFQjCNFpuV-PU6k363qNHjeihipGc3dpmg I didnt read this one entirely^

 • And, uh, how exactly does stealing a developer's game help them?

 • First off, most pirates buy what they enjoy. It's only the little kids with no money who usually don't pay back what they should. Secondly, I suggest that you at least skim through these articles. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-05-24-game-dev-tycoon-developer-finds-success-after-its-cheeky-anti-piracy-stunt http://voices.yahoo.com/why-video-game-piracy-not-hurting-video-game-6714256.html http://herocomplex.latimes.com/tv/game-of-thrones-director-piracy-helps-hbo-series-thrive/#/0 http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2013/08/26/study-piracy-actually-helps-small-films-make-money/ http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/new-study-says-online-piracy-isn%E2%80%99t-hurting-entertainment-industry-220006729.html

 •
First off, most pirates buy what they enjoy.
With "enjoy" being the operative word. How much does someone have to enjoy their illegally-obtained piece of media before they're willing to pay for it? If they play a game all the way through or watch a movie from start to finish, but ultimately decide they didn't like it, how are they justified in that? Also, are the people who have thousands and thousands of pirated songs that they all enjoyed ever going to pay for even a decent fraction of them? As for the linked stuff, which I did read, there are some interesting points (although I'd like to note that the game dev game wasn't successful because of piracy, but because of the way its creators messed with pirates). However, I don't see how piracy helps developers and TV producers in any way that they couldn't help themselves. If Game of Thrones does poorly because no one wants to buy a HBO subscription just to watch it, then maybe the channel should re-evaluate their distribution policy. If nobody's buying a game because they're unsure they'd like it, then maybe the developers should release a free demo or something. The thing that I don't like about piracy - the main thing - is the entitlement of it. People think that they have the right to use someone else's intellectual property however they see fit, whether they pirate it and never buy it or pirate it just to check it out and then buy it. It's entitlement, and it irks me. If you don't think that someone's "thing" is good enough to buy, then don't buy it.
