How do we leave Earth? (IRL)

I've given this a lot of though over the past few years and I don't want Earth to be my final resting place, maybe I'll go live on the moon or possibly Mars. We all have to dream big. First off, we need an easy way of leaving Earths gravitational pull, and I'm thinking magnets. The US Navy already uses a rail gun like runway to slingshot fighter jets off its newest carrier, so why can't we build a tower somewhere secluded and launch space craft the same way? Getting to space is the easy part. Second, obviously the slingshot won't be enough to send a capsule containing humans without turning them into pancakes so jet propulsion needs to be there to sustain steadiness while leaving Earth, but what kind of propulsion will be used while we're floating around in space? Burning fuel for energy (in any form) is old school (old school being as old as the first star) So what's the best way to get from point A to point B? Ion drives have already been tested and used for satellites such as the one that visited Saturn recently, but those are very weak and have the same effect as a piece of paper floating down onto a desk, can they be made better? Not anytime soon, sadly this is where the dream of long space journeys are crushed, we don't have the energy to take us very far (solar energy won't cut it... yet). A new power source needs to be forged, basically we need miniature particle accelerators upon one another to get the job done. Lastly, a life support system capable of recycling all waste and making it usable again. So when do you think space travel like in Destiny will be acheiveable? Sorry for any typos, I'm on mobile.
