How do they know if was an assault rifle if they didn't recover the weapon?

If it's used in a crime then by media logic it must be an assault weapon (which is a term that technically doesn't exist, but created to scare people into having blind hate for guns)
-
Apparently shootings are common in Chicago, and this one made the news because they had some reason to believe that it was a 'military-grade' weapon. That's what I've been led to believe in the five minutes that I've been on this thread anyway.
-
If it was actually military grade then it could cost in the thousands of dollars range to purchase along with a very extensive background check. People who own these kind of weapons are collectors who would be keeping them in the most high-end gun case on the market and would rarely ever shoot it.

Apparently anything that fires a rifle cartridge is military grade. You could have wounded that many people with a 10/22 and a 25 round magazine. - Der

Because it committed a crime. That makes it an assault rifle! It was also black and had a high capacity magazine!
