Private Groups

They're lacking those features that were promised months ago and are losing active community members by the day. Just though I'd remind you guys in case you forgot how many communities you helped to destroy with the update, and so far how you've failed to do anything about it.

  • I know "soon" is considered subjective, but... holy shit.

        • We haven't forgotten you. However, we're not willing to talk about Group related plans quite yet. While we'd like to discuss in progress things with the larger community, there's more going on here than just a few group feature tweaks. There have been quite literally thousands of changes made to the site in the last nine months. And during all that time, we're simultaneously working on Destiny related things that we hope will set the bar (again) for a game companion experience for web/mobile. More specifically, with groups - we don't just want to add little things here and there, we want to give them a new lease on life. In the old bungie.net, all groups combined contained only about 50,000 unique users. Probably less now, I haven't checked recently. Hardly what it should be, IMHO. Clearly the status quo is not "success", then. For that, we'll need something significant. For you, this means you'll have to wait a bit more until we bring the "real" group experience to you. What you have is an approximation, a prototype, designed to be a working placeholder until the good stuff hits. We're not going to waste time with small tweaks to the approximation, we're going to put everything into the "real" experience and unleash it when it is ready. Hopefully soon we'll get to a point where we can start talking about it. Until then, sit tight. It will be worth it.

We've been told 'Soon' for over 9 months. If groups don't get any revamps until closer to Destiny's release, which is God knows when, they may all but be extinct. It's depressing that activity dropped previously in them and many have left, fewer lurk. A private group is the only reason I am still here. There is not much left of it. I don't know if there really are any changes or enhancements that will change that now.

It's activity that has fallen across the board. I agree with you that there is a problem with groups but it's disingenuous to suggest that the addition of moderation tools and titles is going to fix the problem. Repeating this demand (or the many different variants of it) ad nauseam, as though groups would be fixed if the old tools were simply reimplemented, ignores the larger picture entirely. Clearly something detrimental occurred with the rollout of the now nine months old update; (it may have been something Bungie did directly - something related to the layout, interface, or features; or perhaps the update just coincided with a specific age group or generation of members getting burned out and there's really very little that can be done to address that) we should work towards identifying what that was.

                      • I honestly don't even know what could be done to save private groups now. I doubt the features we've been asking for will really make much of a difference. Not to sound like Debbie Downer but that's just how I see things.

                      • Yeah, this really needs to be fixed.

Private groups have very little value with the new rule system. The reason they thrived in the beginning was because they provided a place for people to set their own rules. That's not really necessary anymore. They could still be quite popular for long standing communities of tight members, and from what I've seen, they are. But newer groups are certainly going to have a more difficult time convincing people it's worth the effort. No doubt some groups are dying. And I don't personally like that either. But the lack of moderation tools are not the cause of it.

                        • I think private groups are too far gone now to make a comeback.
