WoW might go a F2P route
Blizzard is no longer opposed to the idea of re-inventing the MMO as a free-to-play title, Chilton added, although the team is still unsure of the success rate of free-to-play games over time. "For Blizzard it makes sense [to go free-to-play] at some point. But a lot of the risk is in making that transition. You hear stories about developers going free-to-play and getting double the number of players, but you don't always know it works out that way and how long it stays that way. We really don't know what the rate is before people drop off and lose interest."
Thoughts? linkhttp://www.polygon.com/2013/8/23/4650246/world-of-warcraft-would-be-in-bad-shape-without-embracing-the-casual

Still wouldn't play it. Let's put this into context: What other games requires you to find 39 other people and spend nearly 8 hours a night, almost every night, grinding the same content you've already played dozens if not hundreds of times before so you can play the new content and do the SAME EXACT THING in a different setting? And this is just for raid content, aka the other half of the game you are paying for but can't experience if you can't find a raiding guild, the rest of the game is just as much of a time sink designed to siphon cash from you. Don't forget that the gameplay is just balls bad. But there's not much you can do given the MMO setting. You can't have nice graphics, you can't have engaging encounters, you can't have dynamic damage dealing (just button sequences.) Then on top of the subscription, they are monetizing almost everything else that they can.

  • WoW still has 7.7 million subscribers, don't expect them to go f2p any time soon. It's still the top MMO on the market in terms of subscribers. At this moment WoW is bringing in ~ $115,500,000 per month. It's nowhere near the point of going f2p.

      • Well it decreases the barrier for entry so more people that otherwise wouldn't play the game can try it and get into it, although I hear it's a nightmare to just install the game. I may try it out if they do so, but even if they do it's a maybe. aka: Cool.
